Standing beside a barrel organ Roger Greenwood and Carol Vorderman introduce this edition of ‘Sounds Good’ while on the dancefloor at Sheffield Polytechnic Student Union Martin Kelner introduces the two semi-finals in the Sounds Good Breakdance Challenge which will feature later in the programme.
Back in the studio Carol Voderman speaks with Eddie MacDonald from the rock band The Alarm about what makes a successful band. This is followed by a performance from up-and-coming rock group Baclash from Aireborough Grammar School near Leeds. At the ends of the song Carol and Eddie comes over to speak with lead singer Susie McCombe about her music while Eddie MacDonald provides some career tips.
Returning to Sheffield Polytechnic Martin Kelner and judge Winston Hazel of SMAC 19 provide commentary on the first semi-final of the Sounds Good Breakdance Challenge between Force Four of Huddersfield and Positive Force of Sheffield. A large crowd watches as both crews perform within the dance space. The performance over Martin speaks with another member of SMAC 19 who is judging the competition about what he was looking out for and announces Positive Force as the winners.
Roger Greenwood introduces the biggest fair organ in the world playing at the Masham Steam Fair. Back in the studio he cranks the handle on a barrel organ with the segment changing to another type of machine that makes music, electronic keyboards. Rob Worby, an expert in electronic music, helps pupils from Frederick Gough School in Scunthorpe create music using various electrical instruments such as synthesisers and a drum machine. Roger comes over and speaks with one of the pupils about the equipment they are using and what got them into electronic music. The group plays samples of the various instruments for Roger after which he speaks with Rob who is convinced this is the future of music. The segment ends with the group playing a piece of they have created called ‘Sounds Good’.
Carol Vorderman introduces a filmed segment from Harehills Middle School in Leeds where former pupil 17-year-old Dwight Powell is in rehearsal as choreographer with some of his former schoolmates on his first dance creation produced specially for Sounds Good. As the rehearsals continues Dwight explains the pieces is about children’s games. Back in the studio the finished piece is performed after which Carol and Dwight walk over to the artists to talk about the performance and production process.
