Summary The third edition of this Yorkshire Television series that showcases the best young musicians and dancers in the region presented by Roger Greenwood, Carol Vorderman and Martin Kelner. In this programme Carol Vorderman speaks with professional ballerina Margurite Porter and introduces her to Amanda Neale from Barnsley who perform a ballet routine in the studio. Another young dancer and singer David Pickering from Leeds also performs on the programme initially in modern tap and later singing having been named Chorister of the Year. Roger Greenwood travels to Ripon in North Yorkshire to meet 11-year-old Jonathan Groundwater, a pupil at the Cathedral Choir School and back in the studio he meets some of West Yorkshire’s best young brass players, the Jayess Junior Brass Band. In the final part of the programme the third heat in the Sounds Good Breakdance Challenge between Body Beats from Doncaster and Two And Two from Rotherham. |

With the Jayess Junior Brass Band sitting behind them Roger Greenwood attempts to play a Crumhorn. Putting down the wind instrument he is joined by Carol Vorderman as they both introduce this edition of ‘Sounds Good’. Standing in the performance space at Sheffield Polytechnic Student Union, Martin Kelner speaks with his co-judges Winston Hazel of SMAC 19 and boxer Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham to preview the upcoming third heat of the Sounds Good Breakdance Challenge between Body Beats from Doncaster and Two And Two from Rotherham.
Back in the studio Carol Vorderman interviews Doncaster born ballet dancer Margurite Porter about the challenges of becoming a professional ballerina and what she is looking for in a young performer. The interview over Carol introduces Amanda Neale from Barnsley who performs a ballet routine. At the end of the performance Carol and Margurite come over and speak with Amanda with Margurite being impressed by Amanda’s abilities. She gives her some advice on potentially becoming a professional ballerina. The three of them are joined by a male pupil at Amanda’s school, the Yorkshire Ballet Scholarship Centre, 13-year-old David Pickering from Leeds who talks about his successes in both dance and singing. The segment ends with David performing a piece of modern tap.
Returning to Roger Greenwood, he introduces a filmed report in which he travels to Ripon to speak with 11-year-old Jonathan Groundwater at the Cathedral Choir School. In the chancel at Ripon Cathedral a choirmaster leaders’ choristers in ‘Lord of the Dance’. The film changes to an assembly at the choir school with schoolboys and their teachers singing together, one of pupils is Jonathan. In a classroom he and fellow pupil during a science lesson, in voiceover he talks about his day and the amount of choir practice he has. An interview with a teacher of headmaster about the pupil’s timetable and its choristers.
The camera travels along a corridor past rooms inside which pupils practice various musical instruments. In one room Jonathan practicing his cello. Sitting on his bed he talks about enjoying overseeing his dormitory and the other pupils sleeping there. Outside in a field overlooking the cathedral boys playing rugby changes to boys during choir practice singing around a grand piano being played by a school master. Again, amongst the group is Jonathan. Standing inside Ripon Cathedral a man in vestments introduces the choir singing ‘Lord of the Dance’. The choir, seen at the start of the segment in the chancel perform the hymn.
Back in the studio Carol Vorderman introduces again David Pickering who as well as being a successful ballet and tap dancer is also Chorister of the Year. He sings the hymn ‘I Know That My Redeemer Liveth’ from the Messiah.
Sitting next to the Jayess Junior Brass Band, West Yorkshire’s best young brass players, is Roger Greenwood who speaks with one member of the band, Lisa. She is asked about playing in the band, her instrument the trombone and being seen, like the rest of the band, as the future of brass music. The interview over they perform a well-known brass piece.
With the Jayess Junior Brass Band finishing, Roger Greenwood introduces the third heat of the Sounds Good Breakdance Challenge. Returning to Sheffield Polytechnic Student Union Martin Kelner speaks with Paul from Body Beats and one of the six-man crew that makes up Two And Two about their chances. The music begins and both crews perform their routine for the crowd. The routine over Martin speaks with another judge Stephen Naylor about the performance from both crews, he is impressed with both crews but names Body Beats as the winners.
Returning to the studio Roger Greenwood holds his Crumhorn while Carol Vorderman tries to play an Ocarina. Over the closing credited, the Jayess Junior Brass Band performing another tune.
