The first of four camera rolls filmed by Trade Films of scenes outside Weamouth Miners' Welfare Hall near Sunderland as the men and their families assembled for their return to work on the 5th of March 1985 following the end of the 1984-85 Miners' Strike.
Three men stand outside the welfare hall chatting, around them others also standing around waiting for something to happen while chatting and laughing amongst themselves. Women and children also form part of the crowd, they give out a ‘Coal Not Dole’ stickers to one of the men who places it on his cap. One of the women chats with the soundman in the film crew.
The size of the crowd grows with many of them now standing around a field near to the hall chatting amongst themselves. The crowds gather in the hall’s car park where a coach is parked, some get onboard while others continue to stand around chatting. A woman holds a furled-up banner changes to a man walking past banners for and Newcastle upon Tyne Trades Council resting against the welfare hall wall. A bearded man smoking a pipe speaks with the cameraman while nearby people gather around to sign a petition or document.
A senior police officer and colleague walk through the crowd looking for someone in charge, the crowd continues to gather around the welfare hall. The policemen speak with one of the men in crowd while nearby women stand around their banner for the Jarrow Miners Families Support Group.
Musicians in the crowd begin to tune up their wind instruments, another banner in the crowd for the Wearmouth Miners Wives Support Group featuring the signature of Arthur Scargill on it. Behind them another banner, this time for Gateshead Miners Families Support Group.
The sound on the tape cuts in and out as the crowd continues to mill around. The band seen previous tuning up begin to play ‘The Red Flag’.
