This film is a set of rushes showing the Gateshead Quayside, Millennium Bridge and other buildings across the River Tyne lit up at night.
General views of the main bridges along the River Tyne at dusk included the Millennium bridge (the ‘blinking eye’), the Tyne Bridge, the Swing Bridge and the High Level Bridge. A view follows of other buildings on the Gateshead quayside including the Baltic Arts Centre, nearby tower blocks and the Sage Gateshead concert venue. Similar views follow as daylight recedes.
A large Ferris wheel which stands between the Sage and the Baltic Arts Centre is lit with coloured lights. The film shows the large wheel in action as light continues to fade. Close ups of the glazed exterior of the Sage follow plus evidence of the quayside area becoming busier. A close-up follows of the pulsating light feature at the centre of the large wheel. General views follow of the Baltic Centre followed by the Millennium Bridge with the Sage and the large Ferris wheel in the background. More views follow of the Sage and Millennium bridge.
Views show the crossing point of the Millennium bridge on the Newcastle side of the river. Lights on short metal posts light up the pathway. On the soundtrack Irish pipes playing traditional tunes can be heard as well as the ambient sounds of the quayside. An alarm lets those on the quayside know that the Millennium Bridge is to be raised. The film shows this slow process. Following that the equally slow lowering of the bridge back into position is seen against a close-up of the Baltic Arts Centre.
A view along the river towards the Tyne bridge shows the piper (Neil) responsible for the impromptu musical accompaniment as he sits and plays near the quayside railings on the Newcastle side of the Tyne.
Night draws in and the outlines of buildings are being lost and superseded by the glare of artificial lighting from inside. Now quite dark the film shows the arc of the Millennium Bridge lit with blue light. Other buildings including the Sage are lit with bright internal lights. The Ferris wheel is brightly lit in blue and white lights. General views follow of the quayside area now lit only with artificial light. Views show the quayside bus in action. Close ups follow of lit quayside buildings. A close up of the ferries wheel shows it’s name displayed in lights; ‘La Roue de Paris’ an attraction normally on show at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. Other close views of the wheel follow.
A static view of the Millennium bridge follows with its lights reflected in the Tyne. The rushes ends on general views of the Gateshead quayside.
