The film consists of rushes of a visit by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to officilally launch the development of the Newburn River Industrial Park on 2nd June 2000.
The film opens showing two glossy brochures placed on a table. The publications are produced by One NorthEast and are entitled, ‘The Course of the Future – Newburn Riverside Industry Park’.
The film moves on to the entrance of a marquee. Staff stand just inside the doorway near a table with an array of identity badges waiting for their recipients. The door opens and four men enter. The staff hand out the appropriate identity badges. Company representatives, local officials, media organisations and others arrive for this important event. General views follow of individuals in conversation. One view shows a man studying the model of the Newburn development. Another view shows displays showing site plans, artists impressions and information in text form. More views follow of guests engaging in conversation. One group stand in front of a display of aerial photographs of the Newburn site. A close up of one identity badge identifies the wearer as Marion Churnside representing ‘Reviving the Heart of the West End’. More general views of guests follow. Outside a red carpet has been placed on some very wet grass. Arrivals walk up the carpet to the marquee entrance.
The film cuts to a truck and excavator working on the Newburn site watched by several people in high visibility jackets and safety helmets. Other views show other machines at work on the site. Another view shows similarly attired people arriving at a car park near the site office buildings. One of those being guided onto the site under the shelter of an umbrella is deputy prime minister John Prescott. His guide describes the history of the site to him. Photographers and film cameras are nearby recording the deputy prime minister’s visit. John Prescott then takes the opportunity of climbing into the drivers cab of a large excavator. Photographers and video cameras record the scene. The party then leaves the building site.
The film changes to the interior of the marquee seen earlier with seats set out in front of a stage. John Bridge chairman of One NorthEast stands at a lectern, the deputy prime minister sits with Tony Flynn leader of the City council at a table on the opposite side of the stage. John Bridge welcomes the deputy prime minister and the guests and emphasises the importance of the deputy prime minister’s visit. A short video is shown to the audience of the history of the Newburn site and the progress of the new development. General views follow of the visiting guests watching the video. The film shows a view of the on stage screen showing the video.
The deputy prime minister is invited to speak from the lectern and outlines the development of this large brownfield site at Newburn and other major developments in Newcastle and the region. He also praises the work of One NorthEast. After his speech he then officially launches the development of the Newburn Riverside Industry Park by unveiling a brass plaque. The plaque reads; ‘Deputy Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. John Prescott MP officially launched the development of Newburn Riverside Industry Park on Friday 2nd June 2000.’ There then follows a question and answer session between the guests and John Prescott.
John Prescott is then interviewed and filmed by a reporter and film unit. The film then shows the deputy prime minister having a buffet style snack while talking to various groups of people as the film ends.
