This promotional film produced by Jay Film and Video for British Bakeries Newcastle focuses on their speciality handmade breads selected and endorsed by British cook Keith Floyd.
The film begins with a view of a large scale bakery producing bread using advanced automated machinery. The commentary states that this bakery will produce tens of thousands of loaves every day. More views follow of loaves bread moving along conveyor systems. Others reach the wrapping stage with loaves being placed automatically into plastic sleeves, the location is British Bakeries bakery at Newcastle. Views show a member of staff moving trays for baked bread through the factory on a small forklift machine. An exterior view shows a van marked with the ‘Mother’s Pride’ bread logo leaving the bakery.
Back in the factory the film shows bakers preparing dough and placing finished items in one of the ovens.
Title: Gary Stewart – General Manager – Newcastle Bakery
Gary tells of the bakery’s ambition to look at more specialist products as current production seems to be static. This would mean a new emphasis on specialist hand made products as opposed to high volume products. They now have a range of new products to offer the customer
A view follows of a member of staff moving a mobile stack of trays carrying some of the new products. A baker weighs dough for one of the new products. The commentary states that the international experience of one expert, is capturing the public’s imagination and influencing the direction of a brand new range.
Title: Floyd on Bread
A view follows of celebrity chef Keith Floyd walking towards the camera, as he states off camera the importance of bread at any meal. He describes some of the different types of bread you can find in parts of Europe, along with static views of some examples. These are the types of bread Keith will be promoting as products from the bakery. Keith enjoys a sample of bread alongside George McKay the master baker.
Title: Keith Floyd
Keith, dressed in the appropriate white coat and white hat, takes a guided tour of the bakery with one of the managers. The commentary says that his endorsement lends huge credibility to the range of new products. His name will be used for branding which will unite the different breads from across the globe under one identity, ‘Floyd on Bread’.
Views shows the launch of the new brand with two types of Italian focaccia bread and a Scottish tea bread, the Selkirk Bannock. Views follow of the different types of bread
A member of the baking staff operates a control panel for a special bread mix, which displays precisely the ingredients for any given bread, in this case the Selkirk Bannock. The member of staff places the ingredients into a plastic bin. A large mixer, operated by another member of staff, blends everything together then it is left for eight hours to ferment. The film shows the mix being left for another hour in a large stainless steel bowl covered with a cloth. The next stage shows the mix being hand rolled by staff into the distinctive shape of the Selkirk Bannock. Stacks of trays of the bannock are moved into a controlled environment where the bread can be proved. The bannocks are then glazed ready for the oven.
The film then shows Keith Floyd breaking a slice of the bannock to taste as master baker George McKay stands beside him and waits for the verdict, the verdict is positive.
Dough is sliced in preparation to make the Italian focaccia bread, which requires special attention in production. The dough is rolled out into relatively thin sections kneaded and then left to rise. Additional dressings are put on as the film shows, including extra virgin olive oil, fresh onions or garlic and herbs. These dressings are worked into the dough with the fingertips. After proving for two hours it then goes into one of the large bakery ovens. Afterwards the bread is left to cool and the bakers give it another dressing of olive oil
The packaged focaccia bread lies beside a plate of samples as Keith Floyd is invited to give his approval to these new products, again he gives them a rousing endorsement.
The film shows new packaging for the products with Keith Floyd’s signature in a prominent position. A mobile stack of trays carrying the new products are moved across the factory floor and a ‘Mothers Pride’ van leaves the factory.
Keith Floyd sits at the top of the table along with master baker George McKay and other bakery officials with samples of new products in front of them. The meeting is to talk about the launch of a new range. Keith asks about the plans for these items which will bear his name, as his role is as much in planning the development of the brand as much as endorsing the brand.
On camera Keith is excited about the brand and appreciates the team involved at the bakery. He is very happy with product and to be associated with the whole project. General views follow of some of the new bread products as the commentary promotes the new range of breads, which ends the film.
