Images of other bridges crossing the River Tyne including the Swing Bridge and High-Level Bridge are followed by traffic on St Nicholas Square and an image of the Newcastle Guildhall along the Quayside. A montage of images showing transportation links in and around the city including the Central Motorway and trains come in and out of Newcastle Central Station and crossing the High-Level Bridge
Photographs of historic sites around the city feature next including the town walls, Newcastle Castle and nearby Black Gate, Bessie Surtees House and the Keelman’s Hospital.
A 18th century drawing in Grainger Town changes to show images of the Theatre Royal on Grey Street and shops along Grey and Dean Street. Other city locations follow including Newcastle University, Grainger Market, and the statue ‘River God Tyne’ outside Newcastle Civic Centre. Photographs of several modern office block changes to an image of the Byker Wall and Byker Viaduct.
An image showing the entrance into a Tyne and Wear Metro Station changes to the entrance of Newcastle Central Station. Inside the Eldon Square shopping centre shoppers using an escalator change to a montage of images featured so far.
On Northumberland Street photographs of shoppers walking the street and entering Eldon Square shopping centre. Inside several large department stores including Fenwick’s and Bainbridges as well as several small boutiques as well as shops such as HMV with shelves stacked with CD’s and Next with their homeware department.
An aerial photograph of Newcastle city centre changes to an image of a train at Rowley Station, part of Beamish Museum in County Durham. Images follow of Warkworth Castle, Cragside and Alnwick Castle feature in a montage of rural locations in Northumberland. An image of Durham Cathedral changes to the ruins of a Roman fort and the nearby Hadrian’s Wall. A couple stand along a quayside on the island of Lindisfarne or Holy Island changes to the nearby sandy beaches around Bamburgh Castle. A rainbow over St Mary’s Island at Whitley Bay changes to another image of Bamburgh Castle and then the nearby fishing village of Craster.
Shoppers and traders smile beside a fruit and vegetable cart changes to images of horse racing at Newcastle Racecourse and Newcastle United Football Club playing at St James’s Park. A young woman wearing a ‘Journal Jubilee Carnival’ t-shirt looks up at the balloons she is holding changes to a ship moored on the Tyne. The sequence ends in a country pub and a photograph of a couple enjoys a meal beside a fire.
A strobing effect on the next series of images highlighting the nightlife in Newcastle begins with the Odeon cinema on Pilgrim Street mixed with images of bars and clubs in the city. The Theatre Royal lit up and night changes to images of actors on the stage performing. The Newcastle Playhouse theatre changes to show the Odeon cinema on Pilgrim Street again and other arts venues in the city including Tyneside Cinema, the Side gallery followed. A montage of various public houses and bars in the city both inside and out changes to a series of Newcastle restaurants such as The Mandarin follows with people seated around tables enjoying a meal. The film changes to a band performing on stage at Newcastle City Hall followed by a man playing snooker and people dancing on the dancefloor of a night club.
A montage of photographs featuring some of Newcastle hotels follows including the Gosforth Park Hotel or smaller establishments such as the Morrach Hotel and the Guest Hotel.
Images of crowds wondering around the various market stalls set up along the Quayside changing to Armstrong Bridge in Jesmond where a family looks over paintings and drawing for sale produced by local artists. A montage of images featuring in the film focusing on retail outlets and local pubs changes to passengers disembarking from a DFDS ferry at North Shields and taking a double-decker bus into the city.
