Title: The Outer West Side Story!
Title: O.W.S.S. A Community Play by the Outerwest Play Forum
A montage of archival black and white photographs featuring various men, women, and children from the local area along with photographs of family and school portraits and image of soldiers from World War One.
A dark auditorium with raised seating build around a central theatrical space, many in the audience look down upon a young boy dressed as a paperboy from around the time of the end of World War One. He is replaced by four women dresses as women of the same period. They are joined by the rest of the cast comprising more than forty individuals.
Following an introduction, the performance gets underway starting with the recreation of the Battle of Newburn from 1640. At the back of the auditorium a second raises stage area on which part of the performance takes place against the painted backdrop of terraced streets.
A series of musical numbers form part of the performance alongside dramatic sequences based around the history of West End of Newcastle. A dance sequence features local children dancing around a Maypole.
The production comes to the end with the full cast, plus some from behind the scenes, singing a final song in front of the raised stage area. To the applause of the audience, they walk around the performance area bowing and clapping along with the audience. The cast leaves the stage and the production ends with the lights come down.
