Title: The Jesmond Swimming Project introduced by Sharon Davies
In the water at Jesmond Pool a man swimming the breaststroke. Nearby, English competitive swimmer Sharon Davies swims to the edge of the pool and looking up at the camera to introduces herself and some of those who use the pool which is scheduled for closure in 1991.
A vox pop with several Jesmond residents including pensioners and a family all of whom speak positively about Jesmond Pool both with regards of its convenient location as well as the staff. Some talk about issues using other pools further away and the loss of a community facility.
Outside Jesmond Pool Sharon Davies talks about the costs of running the pool changes to a man who explains that they [the community] wasn’t given enough time to come up with an alternative proposal, but they now have a viable business plan.
Sitting at a table beside the pool Sharon Davies explains that the best way for the local community to become involved is with a twelve-month standing order scheme in which people can donate money over a period of time. Many of the residents featured state they are a happy to pay an extra charge to use the pool.
Back beside the pool as Sharon explains how swimming is the only sport that saves lives. As she speaks a young mother with her toddler in the pool, around them other young families swimming and splashing about.
Back at the table Sharon says that it is a shame that the building is being run down, it would be a shame to lose this basic community facility. However, she is pleased that a range of local people are prepared to stand up and protect it.
Back outside Sharon leans over a covered in various coloured ribbons which, she says, proves the support the pool has from local residents. The film ends with her asking the viewer to donate to the pool fund.
