Title: Don’t Stop at the Door Part Two. Perspectives on Parental Involvement
In a studio presenter Julian Kranz sits in a chair, in front of him a table with a television on it. On the wall behind a poster for ‘Don’t Stop at the Door’. He reiterates some of the points raised in the first film with regards the importance of parental involvement in a child’s education and asked a series of questions which are responded to by the other participants in this film. They are:
• Nancy Elliott, Senior Inspector Primary Education Newcastle L.E.A
• Sue Pearson, County Councillor Tyne & Wear
• John Deacon, Community Worker
• Vijay and Rita Tyagi, Parents
• Brenda Lough, Parent Governor
• Shahin Osborn, E.S.L. Teacher
• Josephine Niven, Deputy Headmistress Westgate Hill Infant School
The questions asked are has involving parents helped them understand of educational processes such as the school’s curriculum? Whose responsibility is it to encourage parents to be more active in their children’s learning, and how can links be made between home and school? Are we expecting more of professional role of teachers? What is the role of Parent Governor? Why should parents become involved in their child’s education?
The film ends back with Julian Kranz in the studio who states the problems for parental involvement are large, but so are the advantages. It will need a united effort from everyone involved to bring about positive changes. Parents have a right to be involved in their children’s education and a new way of thinking about the educational development of young children is needed.
