Title: A Record of Alpine Assent Without Effort

People walk around a large Alpine lake surrounded by mountains on all sides, on the water many small boats and yachts. A ferry approaches a dock. People walkthrough an historic town with cars travelling along a road beside the lake.
A large building, possibly a hotel changes to a cable car which then assents up a mountainside passing over an Alpine landscape below. Visitors inside the cable car look down on the lake and town below. The cable car arrives at its destination and the passengers get out looking out onto the lake and town far below as well as the surrounding mountains.
A couple enjoy a meal from the boot of their car parked on the edge of a rural road. General views of Alpine scenery with meadows and wooden houses surrounded by mountains. Car parked outside a large Alpine chalet hotel or restaurant with people sitting at tables enjoying the scenery of snowy mountains surrounding them.
A cable car arrives at a station. Inside the car ascending a hillside with views of the forests below. From a viewing platform at the top snow-covered mountains in the distance. Nearby a crowd waits on the arrival of the cable car, a sign reads ‘Plan des Aiguilles’. A cable car begins the descent, more views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains.
In a cable car heading further up the mountain someone uses a cinecamera to record the scenery. The car passes over deep craggy outcrops many covered in snow to reach the next station high in the mountains. From a viewing platforms, views of the surrounding mountainous landscape below and of other visitors either enjoying or recording their visit on film.
Back in town a couple stand with a crowd as two electric trams pass in opposite directions. A phantom ride on a narrow-gauge railway through the mountains passing through green valleys and woodland. At a station a large crowd gathers to get onboard changes to a busy viewing area overlooking a glacier. Crowds walk along narrow pathways and climb a set of stairs to reach a platform where a train is waiting.
The couple seen previously stand beside a sign changing to them sitting at an outdoor café table. They walk along a road and the film changes to a map and an animation of an arrow pointing to a spot on the map. Cars travel past along an Alpine road, in the distance at the far end of a valley a town. General views around a town with a fast-flowing river flowing through it.
In a meadow, cows are grazing. The couple seen previous stand next to a pillar beside a path. Cars are parked at an overlook and people wonder about and. A man makes a snowball from a nearby snowbank. In a meadow a group of people enjoy a picnic which includes glasses of wine. The arrow on the map again changes to a new location and a town with traffic moving through it. The arrow on the map moves again to a large lake where the couple stand looking out on the water behind a barrier. Again, general views around the town with cars passing along busy streets.
The map arrow changes again, and the couple sit at a restaurant looking at people skiing in the near distance. Another green Alpine valley and a smaller town and village with whitewashed wooden building and church as well as contemporary structures. A horse and cart travel along a road past a fast-flowing river which travels through a valley.
Another cable car ride ascends the mountainside passing over meadows and wooden chalets below arriving at a station before changing to a couple arriving at another station in a chairlift. Writing on a building reads, ‘Berg-Restaurant First. 7100ft’. A photographer poses a couple for a portrait with the mountains in the background, a man sits on a rocky edge looking out on the landscape surrounding him.
The second reel begin in another town with traffic and pedestrians passing through it. A tram comes to a stop and passengers climb aboard. A phantom tram ride through the mountains passing forests and clouds in the valley below. A brief stop in another town or village and the journey continues through the mountains. Inside a building visitors look through a window at snow-capped mountains surrounding them and clouds below.
A picture of a mountain with a road or railway cut through it, an arrow pointing at one end and then the other. General views of snow-covered mountains and people skiing. A pack of dogs pulls a sled along an icy track. More views of the surrounding snowy mountains and a man looking out on the scene from a viewing platform.
The arrow on the map changes to a group watching as a ferry boat docks on a lake. They climb onboard and the boat departs with passenger relaxing on wooden bench on deck. People take photos of a castle built on the edge of the lake. On dry land people walk along a road towards the castle and wonder around its interior. From the roof views out across the lake.
The arrow on the map points to another town where a crowd stands waiting on the arrival of an electric train. The map points to the destination of the train where passengers disembark leaving the station on foot. Visitors walking around the town, a crowd watching an entertainer perform in the street. A horse-drawn carriage followed by wagon pass through the town changing to a man washing himself with water from a decorative fountain.
A picturesque Alpine village in a valley seen from the carriage of a narrow-gauge railway departing it. A phantom ride through the mountains passing a number of villages. At the destination visitors get off the train and take photographs or look out at the surrounding mountainous vistas. The couple and a friend sit at a café table eating a meal.
Another Alpine town or village with people walk past large wooden houses built along narrow roads. Large Swiss flags hang down from many of the buildings. In a park people sit on benches as a marching band parades past. A large crowd gathers around an altar as men wearing vestments conduct a religious service and communion. The crowd watches as a procession of religious figures and people in traditional costumes, some carrying flags or banners pass by. In a graveyards, crowds looking over several graves . A wreath has been laid.
A large St Bernard dog sits on its own at an outside café or restaurant table. The procession continues through the town, a plaque above a doorway and the film ends on more Three Swiss flags flapping in the wind with a snow-covered mountain in the background.

Context
About Ron Padgett (1923-2001)
Ron Padgett was born in Birkenshaw, Yorkshire, but spent his entire married life living in Leeds. He became a keen cinematographer in the late 1950s and was an active member of the Leeds Cine Club throughout the 1960s – winning competitions for his 8mm films.
