An amateur film produced by Ron Padgett of a visit believed to be by the Lord Mayor of Leeds to see the ‘Freedom from Hunger’ exhibition taking place in the city. Church of England officials gather outside waiting in the arrival of the Lord Mayor who is shown around the venue following a speech being made by the lead clergyman.

Pedestrians walks past a theatre or auditorium believed to be in Leeds with a large hording above the entrance that reads ‘Freedom from Hunger’. A woman walks over and looking into what appears to be a well with a statue of s child sitting on a plinth in the middle.
A large car pulls up outside the venue and priest wearing vestments shakes hands with a woman who gets out. He and several choristers stand in the doorway of the venues waiting on the arrive of a special guest. A group, including members of this group, are photographed beside the well seen previously.
A crowd gathers around an older woman in a blue outfit who is lead towards the towards the entrance on the venue by the priest. He proceeds to make a speech to the crowd.

The camera records the filmmaker walking along a street. Then it's back to the crowd listening to a speaking priest. The speech over the crowd moves inside the venue. The woman in blue is escorted inside following behind two men holding long sticks, behind her men and boys wearing vestments.
Two children stand around the well, around them photographs of hungry children that form part of the exhibition Inside the venues more posters and exhibition tables relating to ‘Freedom from Hunger’ with people walking past.
The visiting party come outside again and the woman in blue is shown the well seen previously. The priest gathers a group of dignitaries together beside the well before taking the woman around the exhibition outside of the main venue. Out of the street the two of them stand together, the priest speaking with two Sikh men.
Inside a bookshop a woman stock shelves, the priest comes out through the door back into the street. Crowds wonder past the exhibitions outside and look at the well and a donations thermometer attached to a wall starts at £75,000 going to £150,000. Crowds continues to walk past the venue and two men speak with someone standing inside a small kiosk.
Context
About Ron Padgett (1923-2001)
Ron Padgett was born in Birkenshaw, Yorkshire, but spent his entire married life living in Leeds. He became a keen cinematographer in the late 1950s and was an active member of the Leeds Cine Club throughout the 1960s – winning competitions for his 8mm films.
