A home movie produced by Ronald Padgett of a family holiday to Jersey in the Channel Islands featuring his wife and children exploring the island visiting both Mont Orgueil Castle in the village of Gorey and Elizabeth Castle off the coast of the island’s capital St Helier. The family also explore the island coastline as well as enjoy themselves on the many sandy beaches.
At St Helier several boats, including two ferries, are docked along a quayside changing to a long sandy beach with houses and building built near the shoreline. Two women walk along a concrete jetty, on the water below a boy in a canoe. He and three other boys in a rowing boat play about on the water, a motor launch does a circle and comes back towards the jetty. A woman standing on the jetty dresses, her son and daughter sit on a bollard next to her. Below them on rocks people sunbathing and relaxing.
The boy, now in red swimming trunks, splashes around on the surf. He is joined by his mother and sister who begin to play with a ball. Around them other visitors enjoy the sea and sandy beach. From a series of locations views of other sandy beaches and various rocky coastlines.
At Gorey the family sit on a bench looking out into the harbour. Traffic passes through the village and, on the headland above, Mont Orgueil Castle. The family make their way towards the castle passing lush green vegetation. They explore the castle passing a sign for ‘St George’s Tower’. From the battlements views of Gorey below and out across the sea. From outside the castle more views showing its exterior and battlements.
The family sits at an outdoor café. They then sit on rocks while looking out on a coastal landscape. From various locations along the coast waves crashing onto rocky shorelines, the family go exploring.
From St Helier the sea surrounds Elizabeth Castle on its tidal island. With the tide out the causeway leading to the castle is clear and a wooden sign giving a little if its history. A group crosses the causeway by foot changes to an amphibius ferry driving through the water arriving at the castle. Again, the family go exploring with views both around the castle itself as well as its surrounding coastal landscape. Again, the amphibius ferry arrives at the castle with another load of passengers.
Three lorries parked off a road changes to the family exploring more of the island coastline accompanied this time by another youngster. More views of blue sea as well as various crowded sandy beaches and rocky coastline.
Vines hang down over a roadway leading towards a large house, a bus turns into it. On a sandy beach, crowds enjoying the warm weather and sea changing to several small boats moored in a small harbour.
A visit to Jersey Zoo and various birds and animals in display including a lion chewing on a bone and baby rabbits in a hutch. The family sit around an outdoor table, someone waves.
Along another sandy beach people walk or swim in the sea while waves crash against rocky outcrops. The family follow a path along the cliff edge and stand on another vantage point watching waves crash around their feet.
Mother and daughter sit at a café eating ice cream changes to Jersey Airport and an airplane on the tarmac waiting to depart. The film ends onboard the aircraft and views of the island below.
