Summary
This is a film by Jemima Stubbs which documents a protest the fisherman at South Gare held on 19th May 2022, to oppose the dredging activities that seemed to correlate with the death of thousands of sea creatures such as crabs and lobsters. The deaths were affecting the fishing businesses, and so the fishermen came together on their boats in the sea with protest banners, and set off flares and fireworks in the hopes of drawing attention to their cause. Many supporters can be seen in the film cheering them on from the shore.

The caption ‘“Save our Future” overlays several boats on the sea with protest banners tied to the masts - one which visibly also reads ‘Save Our Future’. Fishermen are shown in the cockpit of their boat; one of them is on the phone. A view from the back of their boat shows all the other boats in the sea taking part in the protest. Thousands of dead crabs and lobsters are shown on the beach. Caption “YES to FREEPORT, NO to KILLING” overlays a boat in the sea. More boats are shown. Caption “We are dredging TOXIC SLUDGE” overlays more boats in the sea. A presenter speaks to the camera about the protest. The fishermen are shown on their boat looking out to see. Caption “Make as much noise as possible, LET THEM HAVE IT” overlays the fisherman in the cockpit, with the sea in the background, who is sending a radio message to the other boats. Caption “LADS C’MON THIS IS OUR MOMENT” overlays the fisherman in the cockpit. The other fisherman on the boat lights a green flare, and firework bangs can be heard from the other boats in the background. Caption “If the sea dies, WE DIE!” overlays a protester on a boat, who is shouting to the other boats through a megaphone whilst looking at her phone. Caption “What do we want? CLEANER SEAS” overlays protesters who are stood on the grass overlooking the sea, holding banners and shouting through megaphones. A buoy is shown floating in the sea. Caption “When do we want it? NOW!” overlays the protesters looking out to see from the shore. The green smoke from the flares is shown flowing from the boats. Caption “No more LIES or COVER UPS” overlays a boat in the sea. The yellow smoke from another flare flows around the deck of a boat. Caption “Our dying sea needs your voice…” overlays a dying lobster at the bottom of the sea, followed by the caption “Together we can EXPOSE DESTRUCTIVE DREDGING” and “Watch this space…”
