This film documents a visit to Bradford by the Ukrainian Ambassador Serhij Komisarenko on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the AUGB. It was made by the Ukrainian Video Archives Society (UVAS) but is not credited to them. The film is in colour with sound. The main language is Ukrainian with some English. The film starts by showing the ambassador's car arriving at the Bradford Ukrainian Cultural Centre. The ambassador and his wife are met outside the entrance to the hall by a delegation of representatives from AUGB Bradford and are greeted by Mychalylo Reviliak. Halyna Prodywus offers him bread and salt, and his wife is given a bouquet of flowers. The ambassador is introduced to various members of the community. After a group photograph outside, the ambassador and his female companion are shown the hall and taken to the AUW room, where they are provided with refreshments and the group are seated and have a conversation. This section ends at 21 mins 15 secs. The next section starts at 21 mins 21 secs and shows external views of Bradford Town Hall. The tower is under repair. The Mayor and Mayoress wait on the steps with a small group of people. The Ukrainian Ambassador arrives with his female companion and they are introduced to the Mayor. They go into the town hall accompanied by an entourage of mayoral staff and Ukrainian community leaders, and make their way to the Lord Mayor's Rooms for a reception with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress. Gifts are exchanged and there is conversation and refreshments. This is followed by a tour of the town hall. A Union Jack and Ukrainian flag are draped along the banisters of the main staircase. The tour takes in many of the historic features of the town hall, various significant rooms, along with portraits, plaques and memorials. At the end of the tour, the ambassador and his female companion are shown to their car. The ambassadorial car has the registration plate UKR 1. This section ends at 1 hr 17 mins 15 secs. The next section starts at 1 hr 17 mins 17 secs. This section records the ambassador's visit to the memorial trees which were planted in Bradford City Centre by the Ukrainian community to commemorate the Holodomor, Chornobyl and the Captive Nations Committee. The ambassador and his female companion lay flowers at the memorials and are accompanied by male representatives of Bradford's Ukrainian community. This section ends at 1 hr 21 mins 52 secs.
Context Born 9th July, 1943 in Ufa, Bashkortostan, Serhiy Komisarenko was educated at the Kyiv Medical Institute and Kyiv University. He worked at the Palladian Institute of Biochemistry at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences from 1966, becoming its director in 1992. He was Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine from 1990 to 1992, when he was appointed at the first Ambassador Plenipotentiary to the UK. He became ambassador for Ireland in 1995 and served in both roles until 1998. He stood as a candidate in the 2004 Ukrainian presidential election.
