An amateur film produced by Ken Ellwood of the ‘Grand Steam Cavalcade’ which took place along the railway line between Shildon and Heighington in County Durham on the 31st August, 1975 as part of the 175th Anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. From the specially constructed grandstand a series of historic steam locomotives pass, those on board often waving to the massive crowds watching from along the trackside as well as the grandstand.
Just outside Shildon a large grandstand built beside a railway line full of people with more spectators walking along the trackside. In the near distance a road bridge over the tracks, sitting in the stands Kath Ellwood. From the stands looking across to the other side of the railway line huge crowds line the route.
The cavalcade begins with the replica of Locomotion No. 1 slowly passing, those on-board waving at the crowds. In front a trolly car on which sits a film camera recording the days event. Behind Locomotion No 1 comes LMS Stanier Class 5 4767 George Stephenson followed by a NER Class P3 2392. In the distance an LNER Thompson/Peppercorn Class K1 locomotive slowly makes its way along the track past spectators watching from beside the track. Behind that an LSWR M7 class 0-4-4 tank engine 419.
In the stands a man with a film camera records the day's events. The LNER Class D49 246 Morayside passes slowly, the crew onboard waving at the crowds. Many of the spectators in the stands are in their feet as the GWR 7800 Class 7808 Cookham Manor passes followed by GWR 6959 Class 6960 Raveningham Hall, LNER Class V2 4771 Green Arrow and the LMR 600 Gordon.
The LNER Class A4 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley appearing to be pushed by the GNR Stirling No. 1 4-2-2. Behind them the LNER Class A3 4472 Flying Scotsman comes next and again appears to be being pushed by a much older train: a NER 901 Class 2-4-0 910.
Next the GNR Small Boiler Class C1 990 Henry Oakley followed by the LNWR Improved Precedent Class Hardwicke and a LMS Compound 4-4-0 No. 1000 with its bright red livery. Next the LMS Jubilee Class 5690 Leander followed by the LMS Princess Royal Class 6201 Princess Elizabeth. Siting in the stands Deborah Ellwood smiles at the camera.
Next two tank locomotives beginning with the Wantage Tramway Shannon locomotive No. 5 and a Terrier A1 locomotive Fenchurch. The LSWR Class S15 841 Greene King steams past followed by the Merchant Navy Class 35028 Clan Line with a helicopter flying above it and Peter Ellwood taking a photograph from the stands. Next the BR Class 4 75029 The Green Knight and the BR Standard Class 9F 92220 Evening Star. At the end of the cavalcade the British Rail Class 252 prototype high-speed Inter-City diesel train and carriages.
