Summary An amateur film produced by Ken Ellwood who along with John Crowther of Long Preston help to restore a Burrell Traction Engine 3395 known as ‘The Dalesmam’ (Reg: FJ1536) that is parked in a barn. Two of Ken’s sons help out as he and John work to restore the engine. With the work complete it is takes part in several traction engine rallies at Wilsic Hall near Doncaster in South Yorkshire as well as Castle Howard and Masham in North Yorkshire. All four of Ken’s children join him at these rallies and the film shows them enjoying a number of rides and attractions while the traction engine is on display or taking part in parades. |

An amateur film produced by Ken Ellwood who along with John Crowther of Long Preston help to restore a Burrell Traction Engine 3395 known as The Dalesman (Reg: FJ1536) that is parked in a barn. John Crowther and Peter Ellwood walk over to a steam traction engine parked in barn, they bend down looking at the internal workings of the machine. John Crowher helps David Ellwood onto the footplate after which he looks over the metalwork inside the engine compartment. David sticks his head through the same slot.
A pair of hands uses a file to clear the rust from the engines name plate, Charles Burrell & Sons Ltd. The hands file other rusty parts of the engine and opens the smokebox door to look at the piping inside.
Wearing a boilersuit Ken Ellwood uses a metal sander on the inside of the engine compartment. General views showing various welded and painted metalwork sections around the engine. Work is done to repair or replace the superheater tubes as well as check for leaks pumping water through them. A young John Ellwood comes over and watched a man working on the machine. Ken, John, and a third man work together to install the engines funnel.
The Dalesman traction steam engine slowly steams along a track past a farm with Ken Ellwood and second man at the controls. It turns onto a main road and is driven through Skipton pulling a wagon. A phantom car ride passing The Dalesman as it travels along a country road. They stop to fill the tank with water from a stream or pond beside the road.

The Dalesman traction engine on display in a field, possibly Peter Ellwood standing beside it, A different traction engine reverses and parks in the spot next to The Dalesman. Two men work the controls of the engine, Deborah Ellwood sits on the footplate. David, Deborah and John Ellwood each try crossing a cake-walk fairground ride.
The Dalesman pulls away and joins a procession of other traction engines parading around a showground, nearby Deborah and Peter enjoy a swing ride. Two trophies are placed on The Dalesman by the two drivers who stand proudly beside them. The footplate area is covered with a tarpaulin.
Aerial of Castle Howard and fair taking place in its grounds. On the ground visitors look over The Dalesman on display alongside several other traction engines. At another attraction a steam-powered saw cutting wood into timber planks and the ‘Gavioli Fairground Show Organ’ performing for the crowds.
Nearby a fairground and children coming down a helter-skelter. The Dalesman drives around a showground changing to Deborah and John Ellwood walking around the fairground. John Crowther pays for a toy sword for John and a hat for Deborah. The siblings are joined by their younger brother Peter changing to people enjoying a ride on a steam-powered carousel. David, Deborah and Peter Ellwood try to walk a cake-walk ride while John climbs about a model traction engine that is part of a child’s fairground ride. At the end of the ride his mother Kath helps him off.

Several steam traction engines, including The Dalesman, drive around a show field or course eventually reversing into a parking space. An elderly gentleman is helped down from the footplate. Deborah Ellwood and a man climb onboard, general views of the engine in operation.
The Dalesman is driven off again, and from the footplate, across a field past crowds of visitors. Lines of other traction engines and steam wagons on display with visitors wondering around looking at them. A crowd gathers around a steam calliope which is playing music for them, several engines are driven around the field. A crowd gathers around a table from which woman hands out trophies to a several winning engines and their drivers.
The Dalesman steams along a country road pulling a Range Rover van changes to a dragonfly or damselfly sitting in the grass. A phantom car ride following and then overtaking The Dalesman with the film ending on the engine driving through Skipton.
