Boys from Ermysted’s Grammar School make their way across the third fairway at Skipton Golf Course to reach the starting part of a cross country race. They gather atop a hill chatting and preparing for the race watched over by teachers who stand around chatting.
Standing in two lines the boys made ready to race. The younger boys in the first lines speed off down the fairway crossing another field. Back at the starting line the second group of older boys gets underway racing down the fairway.
A policeman stops traffic on the corner of Grassington Road on Brackenley Lane as the boy’s race past into another field and up a hill. As he passes one boy sticks his thumb up. Further along the route some of the older boys climb over a fence into a road watched by two teachers. A phantom car ride down Raikes Road passing David Ellwood who is in race.
At Ermysted’s Grammar School two boys run arm in arm across a sports field, teachers marking details on clipboards. Other boys race down a set of steps and across the field watched by classmates standing on steps near to school buildings.
A pair of hands holds up a score sheet for ‘Athletics 1970’ taking place on Monday 23rd March. On an athletics field, a group of boys sit on a hill overlooking the track below as other pupils, some in track and field kit, and teachers walk by. A group of boys huddle around a teacher changing to a hurdles race follows by a sprint. Boys gather around to watch one of their teachers throws a shot put. His thrown almost hits another teacher. Three older pupils take their turns throwing the shot put. Back at the racetrack a woman and child watches as the boys in the 1500 metre final run past. At another part of the circuit a large crowd of pupils watching the race.
Young boys race along Raikes Road and over White Hills as part of another school cross country. They race past three small boys playing including John Ellwood.
