A home movie produced by Ken Ellwood begins with him and wife Kath playing with a young girl on or around a Scottish beach. The film changes to the Dalston Agricultural Show taking place during the August Bank Holiday of 1954 on the Village Show Field in the village Dalston, Cumbria. Ken and Kath accompany friends around the showgrounds as spectators enjoy events such as show jumping, a dog show and a costume parade.
A girl rides her bicycle along a country lane. She is joined by Kath Ellwood and the two of them play around in the surf of a rocky Scottish beach trying not to get their shoes wet. In a playground Kath pushes the girl on a swing changing to Ken Ellwood holding the girls’ legs as they walk like a wheelbarrow through sand dunes.
Kath walks along the bank of a river and climbs over a wall changing to the Dalston Show where several young riders competing in a horse trial, their animal leaping fences watch by a crowd of spectators. A parade of horses and cows around the showground changes to a marching Scottish bagpipe band leading a decorative float onto the show field.
Hounds gather around a man in red fox hunting coat seated on a horse changes to the hounds being led away by two other men in red coats.
A parade of costumed children and adults walk past beginning with a girl dressed in yellow flowers and carrying a certificate stating, ‘Third Prize’. A young woman dressed as a Chinese woman passes followed by a woman with a Daz washing power box attached to her skirt. She holds up a 1st prize certificate in one hand and a poster in the other reading ‘August Monday. Dalston Show. If it wasn’t for DAZ I couldn’t’.
The hounds seen previously parade around the showground accompanied by two men wearing red coats on horseback. A dog show follows with competitors and their dogs being presented and judged watched by a crowd of spectators.
Kath Ellwood and a couple come out of a large tent carrying drinks which they enjoyed sitting on the grass. Back on the showground a show featuring children and donkeys followed by a race between someone on a motorbike and another on horseback.
A crowd gathers around a stall holder while nearby Ken Ellwood takes a photograph. Kath walks past eating candyfloss. Back at the dog show more animals being judged, and the film ends with Kath and Ken leaving with their friends.
