The boys enjoy playing with model boats on a pond inside Le Jardin du Luxembourg while daughter Deborah has her portrait drawn while visiting Montmartre.
At Portsmouth dock in a queue waiting to get onto a ‘Thoresen Car Ferries’ ferryboat John, David and Deborah Ellwood get out of the family car passing younger brother Peter. They walk over to a nearby jetty to look at the boat accompanied by their mother Kath.
On board the family stands on deck with other passengers as it departs passing other docked ships and others on the water. Deborah goes exploring as the ferry passes a lighthouse and promontory. The name ‘Viking II’ is stencilled onto one of the ships lifeboats as the ferry heads out into the English Channel. At the bow David, Deborah and John stand on the railing looking out to sea and at the gulls that follows the ship. Kath walks over to David and helps him fold a newspaper.
At Cherbourg-en-Contentin the three eldest Ellwood children stand on a concreate quayside watching a fishing trawler enter the harbour. Kath comes out of the Sofitel Hotel and the children get into the family car which drives along a country road towards Paris.
Kath leads her four children past a Metropolitan metro station entrance. David, Deborah and John race up the step to the top of said metro station entrance, Kath follows behind with Peter. The family crosses Place Charles de Gaulle to reach the Arc de Triomphe. They admire a large bouquet on the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. Looking up people can be seen walking across the top of the Arc while Peter sits on the gravel playing with a stuffed toy.
The family get out of a taxi and walk around a large boating lake inside a park, possibly, Bois de Boulogne. With Ken at the oars David, Deborah and John wave back at their mother behind the camera. Phantom boat ride with David and Deborah at the oars. Before leaving the park, the family enjoy some lunch at an outdoor café.
The family crosses Jardin de la Tour Eiffel with the Eiffel Tower in the near distance before climbing aboard a boat for a journey along the Seine. A female tour-guide provides commentary on the trip as the boat passes Notre Dame Cathedral, the Ellwood’s and other passengers looking out of windows at both other boats on the water as well as the Eiffel Tower.
The family walk through a park past a column with a winged statue on the top. They climb the steps to reach the Sacre-Coeur at Montmartre. From the top views looking back on the city below. Peter plays with an iron gate after which he slides down a stone slope and with his siblings admires paintings on display nearby. Crowds walk past various canvases on easels depicting various locations around Paris, some artists work on the paintings watched by the crowds including the Ellwood children. Deborah has her portrait drawn by a female artist.
The family visits the Zoo of the Museum National D’Histoire Naturelle with Peter admiring several colourful parrots on stands. The family watch Guinea Baboons swing and play in their enclosure. The wonder around the park admiring the various animals including elephants, bears, seals as well as ostriches and flamingos.
The family walk across a square surrounded by large imposing buildings and with a busy boulevard passing through the middle. An airplane can be seen coming into land behind one of the buildings.
With Peter riding on Ken’s shoulders the family walk along a wide gravel path inside Le Jardin du Luxembourg. A man places several model boats onto a pond and the Ellwood children use sticks to move their boats around the water. Ken and Kath sit in chairs nearby with Kath on occasion feeding her children. The family walk away from the pond to a shaded areas of the park where the Ellwood children ride a small carousel. They have fun riding in two swing boats.
The family crosses the Seine by foot possibly using Pont Neuf. A nearby road sign reads ‘Pont Notre Dame’ and a policeman holds traffic for pedestrians to cross. The front façade of Notre Dame Cathedral changes to the Ellwood children still on the bridge looking down on the river traffic below.
Sitting in the shade David, John and Peter enjoy a cool drink, a sprinkler nearby sprays them with water. Back at the boating late inside Le Jardin du Luxembourg Peter and David play with their model boats.
