This is a film made by a local film maker, Ernest Taylor, documenting a year in the life of Huddersfield Amateur Operatic Society. It shows performances of Good Night Vienna, The Arcadians, Balalaika, and The Vagabond King. Also included is a garden party at the home of a wealthy sponsor in Huddersfield, an outing to Chatsworth House, and a Society Dance and Award Ceremony.
Title: 'Amateurs Cavalcade' 'Produced by Ernest Taylor'
The film starts with a group of men meeting in a room, giving a show of hands. Intertitle: 'We start with 'Good Night in Vienna'.
The film then shows a man conducting a group of women singing. It then moves to a performance of Goodnight, Vienna, with various scenes, starting with a dance scene, followed by scenes with an officer and a woman, and more dancing. The play ends with a presentation of flowers to the leading lady.
Intertitle: 'Between shows a trip to Buxton and Chatsworth is enjoyed'
A party of people board a bus and then are seen strolling around Buxton covered in bunting. Some cyclists pass and a couple of the women playfully jump onto the back of a lorry. Then they feed ducks in a park, cross a stream and look around an old church before going on to Chatsworth and ending up at the Peacock Hotel.
Intertitle: 'The Arcadians' always popular'
The curtain goes up to reveal a stage covered with men and women lounging around in classical costume. A man with a long white beard and with an hour glass hanging from his cloak addresses the crowd. This is followed by a dancing scene. The Arcadians raise their arms skyward before the scene changes to someone show a man crash landing on the stage. The Arcadians at first hail him, then mock him and then carry him off after he speaks to them. The old man with a beard reappears and the act ends. In the next scene a group of men and women, presumably The Arcadians, dressed up in formal evening wear, are singing in front of some park gates. They are joined by a dancing Londoner and then they all dance. The next scene is set in what looks like an expensive hotel foyer. Two maids have a dance routine followed by three men. After another dancing scene the curtain comes down, bouquets are presented and the performers take their bows.
Intertitle: 'A garden party at Fenay Court for members and friends'
A large group of people are gathered in a garden with stalls playing various games like bowls and a putting game. In addition to this film, another man is filming the events. Many are sat at tables with tea and cakes with some of the women sporting fancy hats. They group around to listen to a speech.
Intertitle: 'Balalaika' calls for the best our dancers can provide'
The actors try out their costumes for the new show, with the women dancers practicing in their ballet costumes. On the stage snippets of many scenes are shown in full dress rehearsal.
Intertitle: ''Vagabond King' demands powerful acting and fine singing'
Actors and actresses have their make-up applied and get dressed for the performance. Again, on the stage snippets of many scenes are shown in full dress rehearsal.
Intertitle: 'Long service is rewarded with long service medals and bars, followed by a dance for past and present members'
A presentation is being given for members of the Company and they pose for photographs. They are then entertained by a small jazz band, with the ballroom full of dancing couples. At the end they form a large circle holding hands to sing. The End.
