A home movie produced by Ken Ellwood that features his two eldest children, David and Deborah. Both children are filmed coming out of maternity hospital along with their mother Kath and arriving home at Heath Crescent in the village of Bradley, North Yorkshire. The majority of the film features David who is filmed being bathed, fed, and being played with both inside and outside. As the film progresses, David is seen growing from a new-born baby to a toddler running around a field of buttercups and crawling under a fence. Deborah arrives near the end of the film with her older brother wanting to help out.
Kath Ellwood steps out of car carrying her first-born child David wrapped in a blanket. A neighbour opens the front gate of the Ellwood’s home allowing Kath to make her way towards her front door.
Inside Kath bathes her son, dries him with a towel and applies talcum powder. She them breastfeeds her son with both of then looking contented. David asleep in his pram occasionally moving under his blanket changes to him sitting against two cushions looking around and occasionally pointing towards the camera.
Kath washes his face with a small piece of cloth drying it with a towel. She applies lotion to his body before placing him in his bath where she washes him. Now dressed he sits on his mother’s knee, her hand keeping him upright as he looks around the room.
David resting on cushions again changes to a party with people sitting around a table full of food. Slices of birthday cake are cut, and David once again sits on his mother knee, beside him a girl a few months older than him. David is passed to another woman after which he is seen sitting up in his pram playing with a toy. He is presented with a rattle and then a soft toy which he takes with a smile.
Now a few months old David is given another bath after which he sits in a playpen in the family garden using the bars to stand. He now sits on a red carpet or rug and smiles as he is pulled across the grass. He now plays with a ball with someone off-screen rolling it towards him still sitting on the rug.
David sitting or standing inside his playpen changes to him now playing with two older girls sitting beside it. He crawls across the grass towards a compass case nearby which he picks up and plays with.
Kath and David look out a window from inside the family home changes to a naked David wearing only a sunhat sitting on a blanket and using a nearby wall to stand. Ken Ellwood goes for a hike with his son in a carrier on his back. Kath sits in the grass with David playing and feeding him. She carries him in her arms along a country road.
Back at the family home David sits up in his pram playing with a red ball changing to him running along a pavement beside a road. He squats and picks up dirt from a track changing to him sitting in a field of buttercups. He walks over to a field gate and attempt to climb it before deciding to crawl backwards under it. He drops his hat but goes back to collect it. He runs across another field and climbs atop an old tree stump.
A car parked beside a maternity hospital changes to Kath Ellwood coming out and walking to her car, a nurse follows carrying her new born daughter Deborah. The nurse continues to hold the baby as Kath climbs into the car. Now ready the nurse hands Deborah to Kath.
Back home David is helped along the front garden path to his mother sitting in the family car holding his sister Deborah. Kath hands Deborah to the other woman and gives David a bright-red wheelbarrow which he pushes around the garden watched over by another man.
David watches his sister in the bath being washed and cleaned, he helps out wiping her back. She splashes about in the water as her brother helps her play with her toys.
Now dressed Deborah sits on a carpet playing with a rattle. David joins her along with their mother, David having a model railway set in front of him. Deborah watches her brother play with his trains.
