A home movie produced by Ken and Kath Ellwood of a voyage onboard the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Queen Mary from New York back to the United Kingdom following the completion of their internships at the Eastman Dental Dispensary in Rochester, New York. The film begins with the ship leaving the Upper Bay with passengers looking out across the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Out in the Atlantic Ocean life onboard is captures with fellow passengers relaxing on deckchairs in the sun or playing various deck games. From Ellis Island the RMS Queen Mary steams through New York’s Upper Bay passing Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty in the distance. The Statue of Liberty Ferry ‘Liberty’ docks at Liberty Island and passengers watch as ocean liner S.S. Flandre of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique, also known as the French, Line, steams past. On board the Queen Mary Kath Ellwood places a life ring embossed with the ships name over her head as the ship slowly departs New York. Passengers stand on deck looking out at the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty as well as other bay traffic including two ‘Electric Ferries’ passing each other between Manhattan and Staten Island. One of the Queen Mary’s three funnels’ changes to the sea passing at speed. On deck near to the ships funnels passengers relaxing in deckchairs as smoke pours from the stacks. Through a porthole the ship moving at speed across the Atlantic Ocean. Along the starboard side of the ship more passengers relaxing around tables as members of the crew, all dressed in white, walk past. At the bow other members of the ship’s crew are watched over by an officer as they work, around them passengers stand around chatting or play deck games. Kath Ellwood sits on one of the deckchairs chatting with the woman next to her. Around them other passengers sleeping or relaxing. A group playing a game of deck quoits changes to two women laughing and a third scooping a teaspoon of sugar into her tea. Members of the crew walk past carrying trays of teas or other beverages. Kath Ellwood looks up at one of the ships massive funnels while nearby another game of deck quoits is being played watched by passengers sitting in deckchairs around them. Again, more tea is served. A small motor launch pulls away from the Queen Mary and sails around the ship watched by some of the crew.
