Title: Rome and Venice 1957
In Venice a man in white suit helps an older gentleman from a gondola onto steps leading into a hotel, on either side of the entrance blue and white stiped bollards. Once safely inside the gondolier paddling away. A second gondola approaches containing a couple, it paddles away his passengers disembarked passing another gondola paddling towards the hotel.
Chairs have been set up outside a bar or restaurant in the Piazza San Marco, not far from St Mark’s Basilica. Visitors feed the pigeons around the base of St Mark’s Campanile; children run through the resting birds causing them to fly off into the air. A woman with bird food in her hand smiles as she is mobbed by pigeons, around her other people are doing the same. Nearby a local vendor sells packs of bird seed.
A group of gondoliers stand around near the water chatting, some are wearing white shirts and hats with red ribbon around the rim. A passenger ferry passes on the water causing the gondolas moored nearby to sway in the swell.
At a bar or restaurant in the Piazza San Marco three young men sit around a table chatting over drinks, a waiter in a white coat stands nearby. In the background the western façade of St Mark’s Basilica. A couple at a table place an order with the waiter, in the background musicians performing.
From a footbridge a gondola passed underneath, behind it a second gondola one of its passengers taking photographs. From the Grand Canal the Rialto Bridge and many gondolas travelling in both directions.
From the top of a set of steps, a market square below with people walking past various shops and stalls. The Doge’s Palace with St Mark’s Campanile in the background followed by a young woman crossing the Piazza San Marco and Ken Ellwood wearing a red blazer with two pigeons feeding from his hands.
A phantom gondola ride along a canal passing under a busy footbridge and into the Grand Canal where they pass many other gondolas. Travelling along another narrow canal they approach a small wooden hut with a policeman inside and a set of traffic lights nearby. Back on the Grand Canal they pass under another bridge, Ken sits with his camera in his hands ready to take a picture.
A hand holds up a travel brochure for the city of Rome that includes an image of the dome of St Peter’s Basilica on the front. The brochure is lowered revealing the real basilica in the near distance with traffic passing and crowds. Nearby waters spurting into the air from one of the Fountains of St Peter’s Square.
A large crowd gathers around the base of the Trevi Fountain, a young boy sits on the edge of the pool with a bouquet by his side and a flower in his hair. A woman walks over and takes a drink from a spring pouring into the fountain, Ken Ellwood takes a seat on the edge of the pool and throws in a few coins. A young couple stand facing away from the fountain and throw coins over their shoulders into the water.
Another square with both palm trees and small fountain changes to the entrance for the Keats-Shelley Memorial house in the Piazza di Spagna. Nearby, a man takes a drink from the Fontana della Barcaccia at the bottom on the Spanish Steps. A vendor sells flowers from the steps, behind him and about the façade of the Trinita dei Monti. Ken takes a drink from a spring coming out of the foundation and washing his face.
Outside the Castel Sant’Angelo or Mausoleum of Hadrian a police officer dressed in white directs traffic from a small, raised platform in the middle of the road. Statues line the route leading toward the fortress across the river Tiber, two men on Vespa scooters ride past.
In the Piazza Navona the Fontana del Moro and in the distance Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi. A set of dolly-tracks have been constructed around the base of the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, nearby two large film lights. Members of a film crew speak with two police officers followed by a film camera and its crew sitting on the dolly being pulled into position to film a shot. A young man walks past the fountain, the camera just in front of him capturing the scene.
On a beach two couples in bathing costumes enjoy roast chicken. Ken Ellwood watches as an attendant put up a Cinzano sun umbrella over two people sunbathing on the sand, a woman sleeps in a deckchair next to them. Two women walk through the surf while a man swims in the sea.
The film changes to a second beach, possibly around a lake, where men and women sunbath either on the sand or in deckchairs while children play nearby. The film ends on people walking along a boulevard with tall buildings on one side and water on the other.
