No credit to UVAS. Date stamped 10.04.89. Some flicking noises affect the sound but better sound than UVAS_0017. Filmed from the theatre floor near the front row, on left looking towards the stage so more focus on close ups and views showing orchestra. Includes footage of the orchestra set up and stage before the performance begins. Introduced by an unidentified man, possibly a representative of Derbyshire County Council. Performances are seamless and blend one into another. They feature Ukrainian folk dance and songs. The style is refined folk - ballet-inspired dance and melodic singing rather than raw folk. The performers are all adults. The concert finishes at 1 hr 24 mins on the tape and shows the audience giving a standing ovation. The end of the film shows some of the Tavria orchestra speaking to guests and audience members including members of UVAS. The film ends at 1 hr 27 mins 39 secs. File is 1hr 46 mins 53 secs.

During the Glasnost and Perestroika era of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Ukrainian disapora in the UK took advantage of a slightly more relaxed approach to international travel, and invited cultural groups from Ukraine to visit the UK to perform. These visits sometimes corresponded with larger cultural festivals such as the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, or regional arts events such as the Bradford Festival. Prior to this, other disapora arts groups had toured in Europe, North America and Canada, but it was very rare for groups from Ukraine to do the same. This period was a time of cultural revival and a hope that Ukrainian culture could be opened up for the world to share and enjoy. |
