Title: Life Begins At…
In a studio presenter Don Cockshaw introduces six women who are members of the world’s oldest football team, the Argyle Court Bombers. The oldest member of the team is ninety, the youngest is in her mid-70s and they are all wearing Middlesbrough Football Club shirts. They sit behind a table on which sit several trophies and shields while hanging from the wall behind them a number of football shirts.
Each of the women introduces themselves beginning with Phyllis Scott their Manager, Charlot Watson who is a striker, Betty Hill who plays midfield, Violet Thompson who plays in defence, Mary Moore who will play anywhere and Rose Roberts who is their goalkeeper.
To Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ a montage of the women playing football against a number of teams made up of both children and adults, they score several goals. A referee shows the red card to one of the women.
Back in the studio those behind the scenes applaud and Don Cockshaw asking them about why they are not the stereotypical older person sitting in front of the television knitting. Mary Moore replies by saying that this image of old people is now out-of-date, a modern woman doesn’t sit knitting. They like to keep their bodies fit, they don’t know anything about football but they do enjoy themselves.
Phyllis explains how they started as a team living together in sheltered accommodation while Mary talks about the injuries they’ve had. Their families do support them, and they are all fans of Middlesbrough Football Club.
Two mock television adverts follow, the first for ‘Student Sofa Supplies’ featuring a montage of young people sitting and doing things on a sofa ending with a tick-box being ticked. In the second advert for ‘The Finger Phone’ several students stand outside the entrance of Middlesbrough Tower on their mobile phone. They look on in confusion at another male student walk past with his hand and fingers to ear as if a real phone.
Title: Life Begins At…
Back in the studio Don Cockshaw continues to interview the Argyle Bombers football team asking them what it was like to play against George Hardwick and Wilf Mannion. They all talk about playing against these Middlesbrough football legends, but Charlot remembers shouting for Wilf when he played for St Peters Southbank at aged eleven.
Phyllis talks about when they are able to play, appearing on television programmes from around the world and the money they have raised for charity. She also explains the difficulty in finding teams to compete against, many players are too young.
Due to their television appearances, they get a lot of fan mail from around the world and have been able to travel around Europe because of their media exposure. They talk about their media appearances including on ‘Richard and Judy’ and on another programme with Richard Whitley. Mary talks about how she and Charot have gone abseiling in Darlington and down a water tower in Newcastle. Don brings the show to an end thanking the women for coming.
