A tongue-in-cheek student production recreating a live television broadcast entitled ‘Student Spotlight’. Items featured include a film on the town of Middlesbrough, the University of Teesside’s Ski Club, a student football fanatic and presenter Christian Frank recount of a drunken holiday to Majorca through the use of still images.
In a television studio presenter Christian Frank introduces this edition of ‘Student Spotlight’. In the first report Christian takes a tour of Middlesbrough beginning with a phantom car ride into the town passing the ICI chemical works, the local incinerator before approaching Newport Bridge.
A montage of sights around the town begins in Middlehaven showing the towns skyline in the near distance, a large sign for the Teesside Development Corporation, the Riverside Stadium which is the home of Middlesbrough Football Club, and the Transport Bridge seen in the distance.
The Odeon cinema on Corporation Road changes the Showcase at nearby Teesside Park. Other facilities at the leisure park feature including restaurants such as Pizza Hut and Hollywood Bowl, a tenpin bowling alley.
A bus travels along Linthorpe Road back in Middlesbrough, pedestrians and shoppers walking past the Cleveland Centre shopping mall. In the distance Middlesbrough Centre Library.
Inside Stewart Park at Marton several bird cages, inside one a chicken. Nearby a young man rides a playground rocker until he falls off. A family look at peacocks and rabbits in another cage while ducks and gulls wonder across a grassy area as someone feeds them from a wheelbarrow. As they eat a young woman rushes across causing them to fly or waddle away.
A sign for a museum and café changes to an ice cream van parked beside a wall. The exterior of Captain Cook Birthplace Museum with its totem pole outside. Nearby Captain Cook’s anchor covered with volage and a little further away the granite vase marking Captain Cook’s actual birthplace. Christian Frank appears beside the vase to give tongue-in-cheek thanks to the explorer.
Back in Middlesbrough the Empire Theatre and shops and the Hill Street Centre on Corporation Road. Across the road people coming and going from Middlesbrough Bus Station, next to the station the offices of Radio Cleveland.
Back in the television studio Christian Frank introduces the second item on the University of Teesside’s Ski Club entitled ‘On-the-Piste’ presented by Nickie Ruddy. The report begins with an extended sequence from the opening of ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ with James Bond escaping Russian gunmen on skis.
Standing in front of a greenscreen with a backdrop of someone skiing Nickie, wearing a skiing outfit, discusses skiing holidays offered by the university. She provides details of the fun times they have and what to expect from the trips. The report is intercut with footage filmed on one of these trips showing drunken students on the bus travelling to the resort, on the slopes skiing and enjoying booze-filled nights out in local bars. The report ends on the presenter hoping to see the viewer next year.
Back to Christian Frank who introduces the next item on the world of the football fanatic. Footage of Middlesbrough Football Club playing, possibly an edition of ‘Match of the Day’, changes to student Anthony Booth of the University of Teesside football team being questioned about his love of football and how he started in the game. Near the end of the report Anthony kicking a ball about on a piece of grass, alongside him a small dog who runs away with the ball.
Back to Christian Frank who presents the final item in this edition looks back on a ‘drunken’ holiday to Majorca. Wearing shorts and laying on a lido against a greenscreen he recounts the holiday intercutting with a series of still images to illustration certain points. Some of the humour is quite crude.
Back in the television studio Christian ends the programme, a clock on a wall reads 3.30pm.
