Title: Industrial Placements
Graeme Aldous addresses the camera while buying a sandwich and cup of coffee from a café at the University of Teesside. He takes it to a table and compares the sandwich with a university sandwich course of supervised work experience. The bread is the academic study, the filling a works placement. But what makes a great placement?
Graeme approaches and goes inside the offices of the BT Research Laboratories at Martlesham Heath in Suffolk. Inside he interviews one of two students from the university, Mark and Dan, about the technical support work they do as part of their placement with BT. Interview with representative from the company about the students work.
Beside the Guisborough Market Cross Graeme provides details of another placement, this time with Serco Transport Systems based nearby and students working on a project with a national impact. Interview with representative of Serco about said project for the Department of Transport to supply eight motorway computerised systems for eight different police forces around England. A student enters the Serco building and in an open plan office he works on a computer. Interview with said student about his work as a programmer and what’s the most important skill he has learned.
Outside the Home Office on Queen’s Anne Gate in London Graeme introduces a third placement. Inside student Graham Simms sits at a computer, beside him a board with the acronym for the Police Information Technology Organisation (PITO) written on it. Interview with man about work being carried out by PITO on a national fingerprinting system and what work Graham is doing with regards simulation models.
In an office at the University of Teesside a woman describes how these industrial placements are monitors and what can be done if there are any problems. The Houses of Parliament along the Southbank changes to an interview with a supervisor of Graham Simms at the Home Office about his progress. The man interviewed earlier about Graham’s job now talks about how well he is doing.
In an office at the BT Research Laboratories Mark and Dan at work on the telephones dealing with technical queries. Interview with their supervisor about how they are developing in the placement. Mark and Dan talk about their time working for BT and been treated as an employee rather than a student. The student working for Serco says he is being treated well and provides details of what he has learned. The film ends with Graham at the Home Office talking about how his communication skills have improved.
