An early computer animation produced by students of the University of Teesside changes to students coming out of Middlesbrough Tower. Above the entrance a large banner for the University of Teesside.
Another banner written across the top of Middlesbrough Tower changes to a lecture theatre and students listening intently. A montage follows showing a student having a tutorial, a computer laboratory with oscilloscopes and a student graduating and receiving his certificate from the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Teesside Professor Derek Fraser.
Title: Science and Technology “Leading the Way”
Inside a steelworks a group of male and female students in hardhats look around as hot metal come along a conveyor. A large sign outside the premises of BASF Plc at Seal Sands. Inside a laboratory four students in lab coats discuss the content of a tank of water set up beside them.
Sitting at a computer interview with a male student discusses the reason for him choosing the University of Teesside. General view of the university campus and a flowchart showing how a student could get on a degree course via a HND. Research PHD student Gill Ogden works at a computer, she them speaks to camera about how she got onto her course via the HND course. A graph showing the percentages of students awards to HND1 promotes between1987-1992.
In a lecture theatre Graham Hampson, Divisional Leader Chemical Engineering speaks to a class about the teaching approach of the school. Interview with Jason John Lewis, Students’ Union Officer about the latest equipment the School of Science and Technology has available for students. On dunes above a beach two female students set up a theodolite or data-tracker. One of the women, Carol Palin final year Student Civil Engineering, talks about how important piece of equipment like this are.
Back at the university Graham Greatrix, Senior Lecturer Physics and Forensic Science talks about the growth in laser especially in the steel industry and how they are used to measure the activity of a furnace. As he talks the inside a steelworks where a large ladle of molten steel is being poured causing sparks to fly into the air.
Sean Duffy a B.Eng.(Hons) student in Electronic Engineering sits at a computer using a software package he used to design his own electrical chip. He holds a silicon wafer on which his design is printed which previously would have been required to be done out of house. Inside a computer laboratory the chips are tested by Gillian Ogden, she talks about how the equipment in the lab has been helpful.
Inside the Heavy Structures Laboratory a reinforced glass walkway is being installed in readiness for testing. A group of students watch a stress test on a metal component which eventually snapping with a bang. On a computer screen the measurements of the test are recorded.
In another part of the school a computer aided turning centre and milling machine in operation working to a design on a monitor. In a darkened laboratory a camera captures microscopic images on a screen.
In another laboratory John Coulthard, Senior Lecturer in Instrumental and Control Engineers talks about how the University of Teesside is a world leader in measuring pulverised fuel passing along pipeline into a furnace. A Chinese graduate student sits at a computer looking at said measurements.
In the Chemistry and Biotechnology Division a female student works with chemicals at protected workstation. Four glass beakers on centrifuge. In a large laboratory, views of the equipment on offer and students going about their work.
In a lecture theatre Graham Greatrix is giving a lecture to his students on Accident Investigation. In a room lit by a red-light Graham conducts an experiment to show how pedestrians are put in danger because of the colours of the clothes they are wearing. On a wall beside him nine panels all of which appear to be black or white in the red light. However, when the white light goes on the panels are made up of different colours.
Jason John Lewis talks about some of the entertainment opportunities available for students at the university. The marina at Whitby with the abbey in the distance changes to the Church of St Mary and four people looking out across the Whitby harbour below. A village market with visitors walking around.
Sitting on the edge of a desk Dr Trevor Towers, Associate Dean, talks about how the course in the School of Science and Technology will be geared to the students personal requirements. The film ends with a montage made up of items featured in this film.
