A television news report on the crew of the schooner Unda von Kappeln who are about to embark on a three-year journey around the world. Filmed in the North Sea near to its home port of Blyth, members of the crew each give their owner personal reasons for taking part in this expedition.
The Unda von Kappeln slowly sails out of Blyth Harbour. A man on deck looks out as she sails past smaller sailing vessels moored in a marina and a light ship anchored nearby. At sea the vessel travels at speed along the Northumbrian coastline with its sails up and members of the crew work to maintain the speed.
Back at Blyth Harbour, there is an interview with Dr Simon Isherwood (believed to be the Skipper.) He talks about the development of this expedition and how he found "likeminded people" to join them on the journey.
At sea again Dave Grey and Norman Highton sit chatting, Norman at the wheel of the vessel. On deck another man works to raise a sail. Interview Kenyan born Norman Highton who talks about the purchasing of Unda von Kappeln and his desire to see other parts of the world, he would regret this opportunity if they don’t do it.
On deck two men look over the sails, they pull on various ropes. Interview with journalist Nick Palmer who has been made ships sailmaker. He is on the voyage because he wants to see the world and he loves sailing.
While one man sits at the steering wheel another three rush around deck adjusting the sails. Interview with Dave Grey who is from Rhodesia. He explains that he enjoys the outdoor life and is on this trip to see countries he would not normally be able to see or be able to go to; life in its natural state.
The crew work together to raise one of the forward sails as the winds blow hard. Nick Palmer speaks about the attraction of making the trip under-sail as it is an ideal way of getting away from it.
The Unda von Kappeln continues to sail the North Sea, the ship crashing at speed through the water while onboard the crew work together as a team.
