Summary An edition of the Tyne Tees Television series on the wildlife of the north presented by Jonathan Morrell. In this edition a visit to Coquet Island a mile from Amble on the Northumberland coast to see learn more about the Roseate terns, the island is home to half of Britain's total breeding pairs. Next to the River Severn near Kirbymoorside in North Yorkshire where Cara Morgan is in the third year of a research project looking at how well Otters have adapted to the area's rivers following a re-introduction programme. After the break a trip to the Washington Wetland Centre reserve and the work being done by the Durham Bird Club to ring Grey herons chicks at the region's largest heronry. Finally, a look at a new project that is hoped will build up a picture of marine life in rockpools and on beaches along the Northumberland coast called the Northumberland Coast Biodiversity Project. |

Coquet Island, a mile off Amble on the Northumberland coast, is home to 30 pairs of roseate terns, half Britain's total number. The island is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and is a haven for many species during the summer months. Jonathan says: 'The roseates arrive each June to breed on the island and they are quite beautiful - with delicately pale pink feathers'.
Also in the programme Jonathan reports on research at the region's largest heronry at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre at Washington. Each summer, bird enthusiasts fit identification rings to the heron chicks before they leave their nests. 'The rings have a large number on them and allow us to identify the herons through our binoculars without having to catch them again,' says Keith Smith of the Durham Bird Club.
And finally we've an update on the otters that were brought up from the south of England and released into rivers on the North York Moors
