Title: Landmark
Presenter Eric Robson introduces the programme from North Shields fish quay. He outlines the current main problem for the industry which is declining fish stocks.
The first feature looks at diversification on the Northumberland coast. Holy Island is a well-known tourist attraction and nature reserve managed by the Nature Conservancy Council. On the mudflats many species of bird gather to forage, and is a huge area treacherous on foot but more accessible by horse. At Kimmerston Riding Centre near Wooler, horses are part of a growing business. Dickie Jeffreys from Kimmerston riding centre explains that their farming business ran into financial difficulties. They diversified by developing the riding centre, from which came the opportunity to take people riding on the island. Horses are transported to the island, from Kimmerston which is ten miles away. Riders can ride immediately once equipment for both horse and rider is checked for safety. Dickie Jeffreys leads the riders and instructs them in the riding techniques they will need for the ride and their safety. The riders take their horses for a gallop across the mudflats, and then move onto the grassy dunes, where they can only walk their horses anything faster can damage the dunes. As the cross the dunes Dickie talks to the riders about the local flora and fauna. The riders are then seen taking the horses at speed along vast areas of sandy beach. The horses finish their day as they and their riders cool off in the sea.
The need to diversify was necessary for former deep-sea fisherman Eynar Josefson. He outlines his professional background to Eric Robson and has conceded that inshore fishing is a more attractive option for income rather than deep sea fishing, as the latter, he believes is in terminal decline. In the summer, owing to the shortage of whitefish, he offers trips out to sea for keen anglers. The film shows Eynar using maps of areas of the sea to guide his boat hopefully to good fishing areas often near to wrecked vessels. He also uses sonar equipment to help find good fishing.
Title: Landmark
Eric Robson asks Eynar what the best ground conditions need to be to find fish and what size can be expected for a typical catch. All the anglers on this filmed trip were unsuccessful.
William Moult reports on a farm in Scotland which has diversified into offering off road driving experiences. Ronnie Dales four-wheel drive adventure centre is a school for drivers who want to experience and learn about off road driving. Ronnie shows a video which gives William some of the theory needed for this specialised driving. Ronnie takes William out to show the practical side of off-road driving. Ronnie’s farm is close to Duns in the Scottish Borders, it mainly deals in sheep and suckler cows. He was also a competitor on the Scottish rally circuit but has been teaching off-road driving on a commercial basis since 1987. Ronnie instructs William how to approach his first obstacle, which he completes successfully. After completing his course he is then taken, with Ronnie driving, over one half of a see-saw device which forces the Land Rover to lean over at an alarming angle. William completes the rest of the course. He says that Ronnie is also looking at the corporate market for attracting business executives and clients to the centre. At the end of this day course, Ronnie gives his assessment William’s progress. Ronnie says he has done well as a pupil for one day. They change vehicles and get into a smaller off-road vehicle known as an Ibex. Ronnie takes William to his favourite part of the course, the bog.
Eric Robson closes the programme.
