Title: Landmark
The first part in this edition comes from the Yorkshire villages of Flaxby and Goldsborough where an action committee of local people are attempting to stop the construction by Octavius Atkinson and Sons Ltd of new steel works near to Flaxby. Interview Nigel Foster from Flaxby Action Group who have issue with the massive size of the proposed works and the impact on the environment. Interview with George Crowther Democratic Councillor Harrogate Borough Council who is in favour of the site which will be protected from the village by woodland. He believes it is a compromise between protecting jobs and the environment.
The second report in the programme comes from a snowy hilltop, part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park where a report by the parks authority has reported that of the 36 green lanes crossing the park, 29 have been damaged by trail bikes and cross-country vehicles. Interview with Alan Kind from the Land Access and Rights Association who is interviewed by Eric Robson inside his Land Rover. He advocates responsible use an say that it is only a small number of users that cause the damage. Rather than penalise responsible uses the association has released a code of conduct to education users about responsible driving. Drivers should respect access rules and conditions in the spirit of the Countryside Code. Don't travel along any trail that you believe may be damaged by being driven on it.
Title: Landmark
In the second part of the programme reporter Barry Wilson looks at government proposal to abolish the Potatoes Marketing Board opening the industry to de-regulation and free enterprise competition. Interview with William Sprigge, Chief Executive of the Potato Marketing Board who believes the board helps to stabilise prices for producers which encourages investment. Interview with Richard Harris from the Potato Processors Association who says potato prices in Britain are the highest in Europe partly because of the board with much of this additional costs being carried by processing companies such as McCann. The fear of the potato Marketing Board of a free-market economy is that it would be a loss in quality of potatoes. A government decision is expected any day.
