Title: The Last Horseman
Now May on Sillywrea Farm in Northumberland the programme begins in the farmyard with John Dodd who attaches a mowing machine to young horse Sandy to help him get use to the noise and pole. He's had 30 to 40 horses in his life and only two couldn't work the mower. In a meadow John, his son-in-law David Wise, his grandson Richard as well as farm hand Norman Barber pick stone out of the field by hand. It's a job that needs to be done otherwise they would damage the mower. They are joined by Professor David Haravey from Newcastle University who is interviewed about the economics of running a farm such as Sillywrea. David says that most of the machinery is 60-70 years old and can only be gotten now from farm sales. At a farm sale at Netherwitton in Northumberland John, David and Norman looking over various pieces of machinery laid out in a field. Not much of it is any good, but some may be useful for spare parts. They buy a cattle crush for £10 but will need some repairs. They also buy rope, which is very expense, which is carried home by David in a box on his shoulder.
