This film documents one day of a trip to Ukraine made by the male voice choir Homin. It records Homin’s visit to Ternopil, where they appeared in a concert with a male voice choir from L’viv, also named Homin, and the mixed voice choir Boyan. The film includes scenes at the border of the oblasts Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil, the choir’s reception at Ternopil and footage of all three choirs at the concert. This was Homin choir's first visit to Ukraine in its 46-year history. It was made by the Ukrainian Video Archives Society (UVAS) but does not feature a credit to them. The first section of the film shows Homin arriving by coach at the oblast border of Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil, where they are met by an official of Ternopil Oblast. The choir director, Jaroslaw Babuniak, is greeted with bread and salt as is Ukrainian custom. Various members of the choir and the welcome party can be seen on camera before they return to the coach to complete their journey to Ternopil city. The town officials have organised an official reception for Homin, which is attended by various officials, city residents and a male voice choir, who perform a series of songs after speeches have been made and greetings exchanged. At the end of the performance, everyone sings the Ukrainian national anthem. This section of the film ends at 28 mins 33 secs. The next section of the film is the choir concert which features Homin (Manchester, UK), Homin (L’viv, Ukraine) and Boyan (Ukraine). The concert takes place in an unidentified concert hall. It is compared by an unidentified woman, and the songs performed by the choir are usually announced by one of the choristers. Homin (UK) is the first to perform, and sing Rospryahaite Khloptsi Koni (Unharness the horses, lads) before one of the singers gives a short history of the choir and the significance of this visit to Ukraine. They perform a number of folk and Cossack songs, and there are some solo performances. Homin’s section of the concert ends at 50 minutes. They are followed by Homin (Ukraine), whose performance follows a similar pattern, and finishes at 1 hr 17 mins 38 secs. The next section of the concert sees both choirs performing together under the direction of Jaroslav Babuniak. At the end of the performance (1 hr 57 mins 15 secs), there are various thank you speeches to the choirs, as well as the presentation of gifts to Jaroslaw Babuniak, including an embroidered shirt, a vase and plates, and to Mike / Mykhaylo Sywanyk for organising the trip. The final part of the concert starts at 2 hrs 8 mins and features Boyan mixed voice choir who perform a number of songs. The concert finishes with a closing speech from the female MC and the singing of Mnohaya Lita (Many Years) by the choirs and the audience. This section finishes at 2 hrs 37 mins 30 secs. The final section of the film starts immediately after this and shows scenes from the after-show event, where members of the choirs are seated at long tables to eat a meal. This section, and the film, ends at 2 hrs 24 mins 52 secs.
Context The Homin choir was founded in Manchester in 1949. The director was Yaroslav Babuniak.
