A Tyne Tees Television News actuality film of the presentation of new Queens and regimental colours to the 8th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry Territorial Army on Palace Green in Durham on 27th July 1963. Guest of honour is Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra of Kent, Colonel in Chief of The Durham Light Infantry. On Palace Green in Durham Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra steps from a car and shakes hands with an officer who salutes her. They and a second officer stand chatting for a moment before introducing the princess to a woman who curtseys. In front of Bishop Cosin’s Almshouse soldiers stand to attention as the princess makes her way to a raised platform or dais set up on the green, she passes four members of the clergy. At the far-side of the green three battalion units present arms as the Bands and Bugles begin to play the National Anthem. The anthem over the crowd of spectators takes their seats as the band begins to perform a second tune. The princess conducts and inspection of Old Comrades stopping to speak with several of them. The battalion present arms as the two new colours are marched past them after which they are slowly marched towards the middle of Palace Green to a rendition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’. As they make their way across the green the poles are lowered, and the new colours revealed to the watching spectators and media. In the middle of Palace Green, the colours have been draped over several military drums. The three units of the battalion stand around them on three side, the four-clergy seen previously walk towards the colours with one of them coming forward to gives the Service of Consecration. The princess comes over and helps place each of the colours into their holsters, photographers race around taking picture. The princess makes a speech after which the battalion quick marches around Palace Green to the music of the Band and Bugle. As each unit passes the officer at the front men salutes the princess. They leave the green. End title: Tyne Tees News Production
