Title – River Aire Crossing
A group of smartly-dressed men meet on the riverbank, shake hands and then one of the men starts to dig with a spade. The men are seen in a rowing boat on the river. A crane is seen moving materials on the riverbank, with a worker supervising. A landscape shot reveals the works being carried out at the river.
Pipes are shown on the ground next to a crane, ready to create a pipeline. Workers are shown shovelling sand onto a screener, where it falls through. Workers are soon smoothing the sand into gauge boxes. Workers are shown adding mesh reinforcement to the pipes, and spraying mortar onto them.
A crane is shown working on the excavation of the trench in the riverbed. The crane operator can be seen using the controls. The ground in the river is dug up and then poured into a pile at the side of the river.
Workers are seen walking around the slipway where pipes are being assembled. Workers are shown holding the pipes in place together. A crane operator is shown waiting to move the pipes. Workers are shown using a flame cutter to cut the pipes to length with a hand crank. A worker is shown using a grinding tool to prepare the end of the pipe for welding. Workers are shown placing a hydraulic cap onto the end of a pipe to hold it in place. Wedges are used to line everything up.
A worker is shown welding the ends of the pipes together. A worker threads a signal cable through the conduit of the pipe. Workers continue to work on the pipes on the slipway. The complete pipelines are shown on the riverbank, waiting to be launched. Steel collars with lifting eyes are shown in place to aid the launch. Restraining winches are shown. Caps fixed onto the open ends are shown.
Workers on the riverbank and on a boat in the river are shown pulling on the restraints, which launch the pipeline into the water and into place in the trenches. The pipes are shown partially submerged as they move into place. Smartly-dressed men watch from afar. Pipes are shown continuing to slide into the water. Groups of workers on pontoons are shown.
A skin diver is shown lowering himself from the pontoon into the water. He swims to the pipes to unshackle the winches. Workers are shown on the pontoon whilst a group of others are in a rowing boat. The rowing boat approaches the pipes, and the workers on the pontoon are turning cranks.
Workers on the boats and pontoons are shown moving the pipes further into place in the trench with cables/wires/winches. On the slipway a second pipeline is shown, ready for launch. A worker is shown jacking up the pipes forward on the slope. The pipe is shown being moved by the workers. Smartly-dressed men watch from a distance. Workers are shown ready at the winches, and turning the cranks. The pipeline is shown moving down the slipway towards the river. Workers are shown getting ready on the pontoons and boats.
The pontoons and boats are shown directing the second pipeline into place in the trenches. Smartly dressed men continue to watch from a distance. The final parts of the pipeline are shown being submerged into the water. Workers on the riverbank are shown watching the movements of the pipeline and pontoons on the river. A larger boat is shown travelling down the river now that the river has re-opened for traffic.
