Title – Water – Resource and Service
Quick shots of the countryside landscape are shown; rivers, roads, fields, farmland, woodland, mountains, waterfalls. A man is stood looking at a river. Quick shots of other natural landscape are shown; trees, the sea, polar ice caps/glaciers, snow on the mountains and the sky/clouds.
A man in a small boat wearing a life jacket fills a beaker of water from the body of water his boat is situated on. It is murky and polluted. More polluted water is shown covered with a layer of foam and bubbling in some areas from the gas within it. A water pump at a spring is shown being used.
A well is shown being used by a lady in period costume who is shown turning the crank to move the bucket. Boy scouts are shown getting water from a small waterfall on a river in a container. They then pour the water into a funnel through a cloth, to try and filter it. The water is then poured into a little metal bucket above a camp fire to boil.
The sky/clouds are shown. A lady sat in a garden uses tongs to put ice cubes into a glass of water. A kettle boils and the shot follows the steam. A reflection of the sky and trees is seen in a river. Clouds are shown above the river. Rain is shown splashing onto the river. Rain is shown splashing onto debris and human rubbish on the surface of the river. A family of horses is seen outside some houses. A field is shown with sheep stood in it. A water and oil spill is shown going down a drain. A man walks along in a garden, spraying chemicals from a garden sprayer. Rain falls on plants in the soil.
A man and a boy unwrap some chocolate to eat. The man holds up the honeycomb-filled chocolate to the rock formations behind him, making a comparison between the honeycomb and the rock porous patterns. An Underground tunnel is shown. Water is shown dripping down some of the rocks in the tunnel. At the riverbank, the river is shown running just below surface level; vegetation can be seen moving with the ripples of the water. A watering can is filled up from a brass tap on the wall. A woman drinks a glass of water. Tea is being poured into a floral teacup from a teapot. A man washes himself in the bath. A washing machine is shown mid-cycle full of soapy water.
The top of a door with the male toilets logo on is shown closing. Sprinklers are showering water over a crop field. Water is shown going through machinery in an industrial setting. Exterior shots of a power plant are shown.
Bad flooding is shown in the streets; furniture is floating downstream and the water level is covering windows on some buildings. Flood defence mechanisms are shown on the mountains, on the river and on the sea. People are seen sunbathing on the beach. A dry field is shown after a drought. A shot of the sky/clouds pans down to a field of cows. Different exterior shots of the water works show water being held/controlled at the site.
A man watches water below him from some railings. The river is shown from a distance.
An interior shot of an industrial building where a large amount of water can be seen; a worker walks across the room. Exterior shots of the site are shown. A book is opened to show a map of England and Wales in relation to water supplies. A field/hill is shown with lots of large pipes laid out in lines. Water is shown being ‘transported’ from the hillside as a river.
An interior shot shows the giant pumps that are used to get water to higher ground. Landscapes of both natural lakes and man-made reservoirs are shown. A man gets out of a manhole next to a reservoir. A lake is seen bubbling where possibly a fish is near the surface.
A car drives through the countryside roads to a discrete door in the hills, which leads to a pumping station underground. An interior shot of the underground chamber shows where the water pumps are. A worker approaches a large wall of electrical controls which manage the pumps. A model of the reservoir and waterworks is shown on the ground outside – this pans up to the sky/clouds.
A panning shot shows where a planned new reservoir will be built. The river is shown, which the reservoir will connect to. Early building work is shown, with diggers on the site. The model reservoir is shown on the ground in more detail. A viaduct over the river is shown. A solo house/building in a field near the site is focussed on from a distance. Two flasks full of water show the difference between untreated water and treated water. A man winds a crank on an upper floor outside at the works.
Debris is seen floating in water. Water is seen flowing. Water is shown settled in the tanks at the treatment plant. There are interior shots of tanks of chlorine added to water. A diagram shows the treatment system. Filters are shown cleaned with water and air, including the water shown to be bubbling. The water is shown going through the aerating system. A man is seen working in his garden outside his house; a large water tower can be seen in the background behind him.
A worker sits down in a control room and picks up the telephone. Workers are shown in a lab testing and examining water samples. A digger is shown moving dirt near the area of a large pipe in the ground. A man in uniform checks for leaks underground by using an instrument to listen to the road/pavement.
Another man checks for leaks underground with an electronic detector. A man sits at a monitor whilst on the telephone. A man approaches a large piece of technological equipment. A man is tending to a leak in the road.
A vehicle spills chemicals on the road, and a police car speeds over to the spillage site. A police officer alerts the water board via telecommunications from the police car. Firemen also arrive at the spillage site.
A man in a suit and flat cap walks across a field holding a water detecting device. A hydrogeologist examines a rock under a microscope. Drainpipes on the side of a house are shown. Untreated/contaminated water is seen pouring from a pipe into a river. Dead fish are shown on the surface of the river. Water from sewers is shown arriving at the treatment works.
A man turns a valve crank. There are several shots of the treatment works and water going through various treatment mechanisms to remove rubbish and bacteria. Water is shown in a separator, followed by the mechanism for removing solids. The water is shown going through the aeration process.
Birds sat on top of the aeration treatment section fly away. Sludge is shown stored wet, dried out, and used as a fertiliser by a tractor. A man approaches a control board and looks at the gauges. Cleaner water is shown leaving the sewage treatment works.
A boat is shown travelling on the sea. A fisherman on the boat hoists up a net. Another man is shown in the driver’s cabin of a boat. The boat travels out to sea. Reservoirs are shown being used for recreation – children/families are gathered on the grass nearby. Food is thrown to the fish in the reservoir and the water starts splashing. A man with fish in a net pours fish into a water filled container. A man in a boat catches a fish with a net in the reservoir. A family in lifejackets are seen sailing past in a boat. A large man-made lake is shown. A swan on the lake shakes its wings. A boat on the lake goes by. Grass on the hill blows in the wind.
