Part of the Drury Collection, this film contains segments of a boat trip from Hull to Gothenburg, paying particular attention to the waterways, ports and harbours that crop up along the way.
The film opens with a shot of a lock and a canal, quite possibly in Holland. There are then views of the riverside taken from a boat. A short section documents several large commercial vessels docked quayside in a port. The filmmaker takes in the sights of Amsterdam, where there are various views of the city shops and trams running along the wide boulevards. People are seen wandering up and down the pavements.
In Gothenburg, the filmmaker captures the busy streets in detail, before turning his attention to a shop decorated for Christmas, with an interior showing tables full of Santas and other decorations. There are then brief shots of a parade; a brass band leads a procession carrying their instruments and Swedish flags. The film then returns to the river and shows lots of boats docked in a port. Vessels are loaded with cargo which is winched onto the ships.
Various tall boats docked in the port then become the focus, and one particular boat is named 'Viking', showing all its rigs and its masts. More views show harbour, including shots of the residential architecture along the sea front and a hydraulic bridge parting to allow boats out to sea. The light then begins to fade with shots capturing the harbour at dusk. The film closes with views at sea and the final shot features a bright red boat named 'Spurn'.
