Title: Inner Space
Sitting in a studio presenter Paul Black to camera introduces this edition that looks at the sentiments of peoples with direct experience of war through song and personal memories. He introduces four members of the South Shields Fellowship Choir; Alf Pawsey, Norman Taylor, Tommy Sanderson & Charles Gutteridge.
In another part of the studio the South Shields Fellowship Choir perform ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’ accompanied by one of their members on piano.
Paul Black speaks with each of the four men about their personal experiences of Remembrance Sunday and how different they are from those who haven’t been part of war. A photograph of a platoon of soldiers taken during World War Two, a circle highlights Alf Pawsey.
Tommy Sanderson talks about his and his four brothers all going to sea, he became a Merchant Seaman. He tells a story about his ship being torpedoed followed by the choir singing ‘Sons of the Sea (Men of the Ocean)’. Tommy concludes his story, and the choir performs ‘We Saw the Sea’ by Irving Berlin.
Charles Gutteridge talks about his experiences fighting in North Africa and the use of dummy tanks to confuse the Germans. He talks about his worst experiences being dive bombed by Stuka aircraft. Norman Taylor also talks about his experience being part of a deception unit that also used dummy tanks in France, the choir perform ‘In the Gloaming’.
Alf Pawsey talks about members of his family who died during the war and not being able to visit their graves. His faith never wavered and became stronger when he came out of the army. Tommy Sanderson talks about his faith and visiting one of his brother’s grave, the choir performs ‘Keep the Home-Fires Burning’.
Paul Black asks Charles Gutteridge what he remembers of the meaning of the war when he, and others like him, were fighting it. He knew he was losing the best years of his life, but it was for a cause that had to be done.
Alf Pawsey talks about the ‘Slaves Chorus’ from the Verdi opera ‘Nabucco’ and why it is important to the choir. The choir then performs ‘Speed Your Journey’ from said opera adapted and arranged by Sydney Northcote.
The group are asked if Remembrance Sunday helps to contain their memories and their grief or is it something they think about all the time. The programme ends with the choir singing ‘The Long Day Closes’ by Sir Arthur Sullivan.
