An amateur record of what is believed to be the 1952 British Carp Angling (BCA) casting championship taking place along an unknown river with competitors casting their baited lines from along the riverbank and from a platform to test skills in accuracy and distance. A large crowd has also gathered to watch this prestigious events, with results being posted on a noticeboard.
In a field four men cast their lines using several different styles.
Standing on a wooden platform in a river a male competitor casts his line into the water, he repeats the actions several times. Along the riverbank men and women sit or stand watching, a film or television camera recording the event.
A second competitor casts his rod from the platform several times watched by those along the riverbank. Two men and two women sitting on chairs beside the water turn towards the camera. Nearby a man in a cap casts from the river’s edge watched by a man standing to one side. He attempts to cast the line into one of four circle markers places on the water a little distance away from the shore.
In the near distance another angler casting from the platform seen previous, in front of him in the water a line has been placed towards which towards which he and the other competitors are casting. Again, along the shoreline spectators sit watching.
A younger man in a dark sweater stands by the edge of the water casting his rod. On the platform another man does stretches to cast his line further, a second man stands on the platform casting a much longer and thicker rod than the previous competitor. A third man casts his line several time cuts to him sitting in a rowing boat being rowed across the water.
A marquee near to the edge of the water with loudspeakers set up just outside the entrance. Three men and a woman sit on chairs outside, other stands around chatting. On the platform another competitor casting his line.
Five men stand looking at a piece of paper pinned to a noticeboard set up next to the marquee, some make notes. On the platform another competitor casting his line. Two men pose for the camera in front of a tree, back on the platform another competitor wearing a beret casts his line. A young couple stand near to the marquee, he kneels so that he can fix the reel on his rod. A man in a suit now casts his line from the platform.
A large crowd now stands along the riverbank beside the marquee, behind them are houses and a wall. On the platform another competitor casting using a much longer rod than the previous men, a dog wonders along the walkway away from the platform. He makes several castings into the water before the film changes to show a second man using a similar sized rod.
The crowd along the riverbank stands or sits, the man seen earlier in the cap sits on a rock on the edge of the water. A Scottish marching band practices beside a road, back at the river the large crowd now watches men casting from both the riverbank as well as the platform. The marching band performing changes to some of the spectators walking away. The film ends on two men wearing rosettes sit watching another competitor on the platform casting his line.
