A production of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ put on by the Whitley Bay Pantomime Society held at the Playhouse Whitley Bay staring Natalie Gilbert as ‘Princess Beauty’, Neville Wanless as the ‘King’ and Valarie Hopper as the witch ‘Carabosse’ with Rob Smith and Francis McSherry as the comedy duo ‘Muddles and Puddles’.

Out onto the stage comes the ‘Lilac Fairy’ who speaks with the audience, on the other side of the stage the witch ‘Carabosse’. The curtain is raised revealing a decorative stage and a chorus who perform the first of several song and dance routines. The production continues with Rob Smith and Francis McSherry coming onto the stage via the auditorium chatting with some in the audience. The feature later in a comedy cooking routine. The first half ends with the ‘Princess Beauty’ asleep and a ballet routine.

Music begins to play, the audience clapping along. The lights on stage go up and the production continues. The curtain goes down and the ‘King’ comes out on stage to sing a song and to play his ukulele, the audience clap along.
The pantomime comes to an end and Rob Smith and Francis McSherry come back onto stage to acknowledge some of the groups and parties in the theatre that night. They then lead the audience in singing the ‘Willy Wonka Song’, the words set up on a stand for the people to read. A group of birthday boys and girls come up on stage to and are asked what they got for Christmas. They leave being handed bags of sweets by the ‘Lilac Fairy’.
The curtain is raised once more for a final dance routine after which the full cast comes out to take a bow to the audience and to sing a final song. The society President Jim Gordon and Chairman Raymond Hammond come out on stage to address the audience and to present bouquets and gifts to some of the cast and those working behind the scenes. The production ends with everyone singing the National Anthem and the audience beginning to leave the theatre.
