Title: Whitley Bay Pantomime Society. Sleeping Beauty. 1998
A puff of smoke and ‘Lilac Fairy’ played by Lilian Wilson appears on stage to address the audience. Another puff of smoke and the witch ‘Carabosse’ played by Valarie Hopper appears cackling at the audience. The two-exchange dialogue before the stage curtains opens as the production begins with various song and dance routines featuring both men, women, and children. The comedy duo of Len Hayden and Rowland Maughan perform a routine, a group of young children do a dance dressed as the Teletubbies.
The performance ends and Len and Rowland come back out to speak with the audience and acknowledge some of the parties or groups who are in the theatre that night before leading the audience in a rendition of the ‘Hokey Cokey’. Eight children are invited onto the stage and are asked about what they got for Christmas before singing and dancing along to the ‘Hokey Cokey’. The song over, the ‘Lilac Fairy’ hands out bags of sweets as the children return to their chair before joining Len and Rowland in the ‘Hokey Cokey’.
The curtains raise once more for a final dance routine after which the full cast come out to take a bow. Rowland Maughan comes forward to speak to the audience to thank those who have helped behind the scenes, several bouquets are presented. A special congratulations is given to the production’s director Damian Cook who recently proposed to cast member Kathryn Flynn, a banner is held up for them. One of the founders of the Whitley Bay Pantomime Society Ernie Scorer comes out on the stage to applause. He makes a speech thanking Rowland Maughan for his service to the society. Roland is presented with a gift. The film ends with the cast singing of the National Anthem and the curtain falling for the final time.
