A visit to Sunderland by the Prince of Wales on the 31st May 1978 captured by the cameras of Tyne Tees Television. A visit to Sunderland by the Prince of Wales on the 31st May 1978 captured by the cameras of Tyne Tees Television. The visit begins with the opening of the Crowtree Leisure Centre by the prince followed by a tour of the facility. Outside he chats happily with a group of disabled people followed by a walkabout with the large crowds who have come out to greet him. In the second and final part of the visit the prince attends a military ceremony taking place in the grounds of Sunderland City Council.
Large crowds stand behind barriers outside the Crowtree Leisure Centre in Sunderland. A fleet of cars are parked up outside. Prince Charles makes a speech as part of the opening ceremony before revealing a plaque of the visit.
Prince Charles is given an escorted tour around the centre learning about the various sporting activities that take place there. From a balcony he looks down on a karate class taking place in a sport hall below, nearby other people are playing badminton. Accompanied by the Lord Mayor of Sunderland, Prince Charles examines a number of children’s paintings that are on display.
In another part of the sports centre men playing bowls, two of them invite Prince Charles to roll a ball. He is shown how to do it before rolling one. Interview with the two men who were able to speak with the prince about the encounter and of the prince chatting with some of the other bowls players.
On his way out of the leisure centre, Prince Charles stops to speak with a sailor standing to attention near the entranceway. He then chats with some invited guests in the entranceway including a several people in wheelchairs. Charles then goes on a walkabout with the crowds, some are chanting, "We Want Charles!"
The Royal car departs and the film changes to a military ceremony taking place outside the offices of Sunderland City Council with the prince watching a troop of soldiers coming to attentions. The Prince leaves.
