This film shows celebrations for the Guides Association 60th anniversary and the official opening of 'GuideAcres’ camp in Yorkshire.
The film opens with a brief view of someone’s hand, some grass then a view of the guides flag flying from a bamboo flagpole.
Groups of guides are gathered in a field. One group stands near the opening of a tent, some of the guides are dressed in the uniform from earlier years, they hold small placards showing the year they represent.
Out on the field younger girls, some in brownie uniform look closely at what seem to be washing bowls supported on wooden poles.
The film then shows a large version of the official insignia celebrating the guides anniversary which hangs from a wooden frame. It reads ‘Diamond Jubilee 1910 – 1970. Two cardboard cut-outs representing guides are also attached to the frame.
General views follow of the camp, showing tents and a forest at the edge of the field.
Large groups of guides and brownies gather. One group play a game where a small ball is thrown into empty jam jars on a table. Another game involves a model railway and pieces of card which have the names of towns written on them. Other cards with different statements are placed around the circular railway. When the clockwork engine stops next to a written card presumably a prize is won.
A large group of guides and brownies gather behind a rope which encircles a section of the field. The camera shows a view of the circle of onlookers.
A senior guide speaks into a microphone. A mayor arrives and shakes hands with a senior scout who is also at the gathering. Official guests sit on chairs near the small table and microphone. The senior guide speaks to the crowd, general views show the assembly. The mayor speaks to the crowd. The film shows the official insignia on his chains of office.
A priest addresses the crowd and leads the gathering in prayer. Some official business takes place at the microphone stand.
The film moves on to a girl guide who steps forward onto open grass and holds up a piece of card which has the letter ‘D’ written on it. Guides in couples linking hands dance onto the field and form a circle as part of the dance. They leave the field to a round of applause.
The letter ‘I’ is shown to the crowd. A group of guides with some others wearing coloured headscarves and various costumes walk onto the field. Another placard is raised and reads, ‘Hull South’.
The letter ‘A’ is the next letter shown to the crowd. A group enters the field and demonstrate a variety of athletic sports and exercises.
The letter ’M’ is raised and a fashion parade follows showing how the guides uniform has changed over the years. Guides dressed in the period hold a dated placard in front of them as the walk around the arena.
The letter ‘O’ makes the next appearance, along with letters ‘D’ and ‘N’ held up together for the camera. A brief view of an enactment involving trees and animals gives way to groups of guides holding up placards some with dates written on them, another group stand nearby waiting for some event to start. A couple of the senior guides appear to be giving the groups guidance.
The film cuts briefly to a zip wire which some of the guides and man in a suit try out.
A view looking from a high point shows how the groups seen moments ago have organised themselves. They pose for the camera as a row of guides at the front show individual letters to the camera which spell out the word ‘Diamond’. The group at the back some are Brownies holding up small placards, one for each decade. One guide at the back of the group holds up a model of the guide insignia, the trefoil. A label stuck on to the centre of the trefoil reads. ‘Girl – 1910- Guides ‘Be Prepared’
The camera pulls back showing other guides holding diamond shaped pieces of card in front of them. A closer view shows the word ‘Diamond’ with individual letters being held up towards camera. A closer view of members of the tribute group follows.
General views follow of guides, brownies guests and visitors at the camp, gathered in a large circle several people deep. Guides light a ceremonial bonfire, everyone applauds. The film ends as a senior guide directs everyone in song from the microphone stand.
