A promotional film produced by Bryan McIvor for the Sunderland based ASSA Training and Development about their training programme for young people to teach them the skills necessary to work production in the automotive industry.
On a brick wall a sign for ‘ASSA’.
In a classroom a group of young men sit around a table listening to a ‘Gateway Presentation’. In an engineering workshop young man works with a piece of machinery to cut a piece of metal, around him others work around a conveyor.
In a different classroom setting a man gives an induction to the training course to a group of young men and women. In another classroom another instructor uses an overhead projector to help with his induction.
In a workshop a young man uses a piece of heavy machinery to cuts a piece of sheet metal. Matthew Petty from Sunderland takes the cut metal back to table after which he is interviewed about his thoughts on the course. He talks about how he got onto it via the ‘New Deal’ and what he has learned in the last five weeks.
In another part of the workshop two young men in blue boilersuits put a wheel onto the chassis of a go-kart, part of the training to work in a ‘high-volume manufacturing environment’. Other work constructing pieces for the go-kart along a conveyor.
Along another part of the conveyor one-man places bolts into the holes of two pieces of metal before passing it along to colleague who uses an electric screwdriver to secure the bolts in place. An electric display board above the workshop gives targets and times for the work being done.
In an officer one of the trainees speaks with an adviser before shaking her hand.
Back in the workshop a man speaks to the camera about what can be achieved while on this course and thanks the viewer for watching. The film ends back on the sign on a wall seen at the start of this film.
