Willie Maddren was a Billingham born professional footballer who not only played for Middlesbrough FC between 1968 and 1979 but was also the club’s manager between 1984 and 1986.

The darkened stage at the Middlesbrough Little Theatre, in the pits beneath the stage a band who perform music from several popular musicals including ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, and ‘Phantom of the Opera’.

The lights come up as the curtains open and a troupe of dancers perform on stage. Their routine over they leave and are replaced by a series of male and female singers and dancers performing a variety of routines from several popular musicals. In between a number of performances compare Mark Pages comes on stage to talk about Willie Maddren and this appeal and to introduce certain acts including the Middlesbrough Choral Group who appear twice during this performance.
The production comes to an end with the full cast performing together on stage. Their rendition over Geoff David, the producer and director, comes forward and makes a speech at the end of which he introduced former Middlesbrough footballer George Smith. Mr Smith speaks about this production and Willie Maddren. The curtains close to applause of the audience and with the show over people begin to leave.
