From atop Eston Nab the ICI Wilton Works below with various chemical plants, cooling towers and the Wilton Power Station. Traffic moves along roads through the Wilton Works site. At the Transport Department ICI tankers are parked changing to a diesel shunter train moving chemical tanks along railway tracks through the site. General views of the ICI Wilton Works.
Title: The Choice of a Lifetime
Title: Process Plant Operators
A young man, a Process Plant Operator, in hardhat and boiler suit writes down the readings from a chart recorder before looking over other dials and instruments on a control panel. He walks over to an older man sitting at a control desk and advises an issue. The man at the desk picks up a telephone to call for an Instrument Artificer.
Title: Instrument Artificer
An older man, the Instrument Artificer, checkers and makes repairs to an instrument in the control panel. In a workshop another Instrument Artificer repairs and calibrates a faulty instrument. Nearby a second man works of a number of printed circuit boards using an oscilloscope and other electronic testing equipment. At a table another Artificer in an ICI boilersuit looks over an engineering drawing before making an adjustment on a piece of equipment.
Outside an Artificer climbs a ladder to read the dials on an instrument, part of a large chemical tank. Back in the workshop two men work to position a control value inside a test rig in readiness for inspection and repair. Back inside the workshop as well as on site Instrument Artificers work to inspector, calibrate and repair various instruments and pieces of equipment.
Title: Fitter
In a workshop a Fitter works alongside a machine turner to bore a hole to the correct size and calibration into a valve. Another Fitter works a hydraulic press to remove the shaft from a large gearbox. A third Fitter bores very fine holes into a cylinder, he watches as another hole is drilled by machine. At another station a hand-crane is used to lift the cover on a piece of equipment before testing of that item can begin. Outside on site a Plant Fitter removes a vent cover from a large pipe.
Title: Turner
In a large engineering workshop Turners work to machine and cut metal to produce new components or to repair existing ones. A Turner works at the controls of a horizontal borer to repair the end plate of a heat exchanger. At another machine a young man prepares the machine using a surface gauge and a dial-test indicator to properly calibrate a lathe for a new project. Another young man works a turning machine, a white liquid is being poured onto the metal been worked as lubrication. Another prepares and works an automated component fabrication machine.
In an officer a man, the Programmer, hands a young woman sheets of paper which she checks over. She walks over to a keyboard and begins types the information into a machine that coverts the information into a roll of punch-tape, back in the workshop the finished punch-tape is fed into the machine by a Turner who watches as the fabricator creates the new part.
Title: Electrician
An Electrician stands atop a set of step checking over a newly fitted fluorescent light. In a workshop another man works to repair a broken light fitting. In an office two Electricians works to fit a new domestic wall socket while back in the workshop another Electrician looks over a large industrial switchgear. Two Electricians look over and discuss an electrical drawing or diagram. At a workbench another Electrician checks the circuits of a portable tool using an Ivo-meter. In another part of the workshop an Electrician opens a fuse box, checks for the correct fuse before removing it.
At the control desk inside the main power station a man makes a telephone call. Inside the Generator Room two men walk past one of the large generators, a third engineer follows shortly after. Outside, an Electrician tests the wiring inside a gearbox for a motor attached to a drive or pump to make sure they have been properly isolated. A large sign reads ‘Danger 66,000 Volts’ attached to the fence of an electrical substation.

Title: Plumber
Piping of various sizes are being stored on wooden blocks changes to various pipefittings on a table. In a workshop two men work a hydraulic bending machine to bend a piece of piping. At another bending machine a third man bend a smaller piece if pipe to the shape required. In another part of the workshop an automatic pipe bending machine in operation. Two men inspect a section of piping as it comes out of a flanging machine. Another uses an acetylene torch to cut the end of a section of piping followed by another watching an automatic profile cutting machine in operation. In another park of the workshop a Plumber uses an electoral arc welding equipment to tac a section of piping and a fitting together. He uses a set square to check the angle before final welding.
Title: Sheet Metal Worker
In a workshop an engineer looks over a prepared engineering drawing with a long ruler. Using the drawing as a template he takes measurements from a section of ventilation duct on the desk beside him. In another part of the workshop a young man passes a piece of sheet metal through a flanging machine before fitting it to other prepared sections nearby using a special hammer. At a punching machine an operator is creating metal discs, at a guillotine a section of sheet metal is being cut to size by the same operator. Two men work a machine to bend light-gauge plate metal, the two men check over to see if the shape is correct. At a hand-bending machine they work together to bend another sheet into an elliptical shape while another at a spot-welding machine to join wire gauze to metal plate to form part of a shield-guard.
Title: Plater
At a metal bending machine two men prepare a thicker piece of metal for bending. The formed plate is moved onto a mild-steel block where one of the men uses a set square to check the angles and a heavy hammer to make minor adjustments. At a guillotine another engineer cuts a section of metal to size. On a nearby workbench the engineers mark out the metal plate before cutting.
In a different workshop after cutting the ends of a heavy-duty roller are removed and a crane is used take the weight of the cylindrical piping that has been worked on and moved onto the workshop floor. A man uses hammers to make minor adjustments to the cylinder and uses a template to make sure they are correct. Laid out of the floor the Plater looks over the cylinder in readiness for fitting to other sections. On a bench he and another man look over the end of an end plate which is fitted to a smaller cylinder, a Welder comes over and the two men talk before the Welder welds the plate onto the pipe.
Title: Welder
On a workbench a Welder uses an electoral arc to attached blades to a large drill bit. Another Welder uses oxy acetylene gas welding equipment while a third uses an argon arc. A fourth welder works to weld a large end pipe.
Inside the Wilton Training Centre apprentice engineers work at various workbenches learning the trades featured in this film.
