An amateur film produced by John Scott Forsyth of a visit to Moscow while part of a delegation from ICI helping to build a Polyethylene plant in the city of Navapolatsk in what is Belarus today. During their time in Moscow they visit Red Square, the GUM Department Store as well as the Monument to the Conquest of Space. However, most of the film focuses on ordinary Muscovites going about their daily lives shopping in stores or walking through wintery Moscow. Passengers sit in the departure lounge of an airport, a man in a fur hat paces while smoking a cigarette. A bus carries passengers across the tarmac, they climb aboard their waiting Japan Air Lines aircraft, three men at the top of the steps stop and turn. From a hotel window snow covered buildings changes to a couple walking past the Kremlin toward Red Square in Moscow. In Red Square itself snow is piled high, in the distance the State Historical Museum changes to a group of people walking past the walls of the Kremlin. Visitors and locals walk across the square, a group of men stand in the snow. In the background St Basil’s Cathedral. Inside the GUM department store a banner hangs down over the walkway, writing reads ‘Noqapku’. Muscovites mingle with visitors wondering through the store on both the ground as well as first floor. Back outside a man shovels snow onto a conveyor that loads it into a lorry followed by the exterior of the Annunciation Cathedral near to the Kremlin with crowds walking nearby. More people walk around other churches, The Cathedral Church the Saviour. In a park a statue with a small crowd gathered around it. Local’s walk past along icy paths changes to a bus travelling through the city past an apartment block with a large mural of Lenin on the side. An older woman walks up to a decorative kiosk, a group of schoolboys looks back at the camera as they walk by. Inside a department store two women in white coats and large chef-type hats serve customers at their tills. Around the store customers look over goods for sale on shelve. On a wall a decorative cloth. Outside pedestrians walk carefully along icy path passing snow piled high on both side. Inside another store three women stand chatting beside a rack of clothing. Around the store women look over the items hanging from the racks. A snow clearing machines is drive along a road, it gets stuck briefly in the ices, its wheels spinning. Two men chatting outside changes to the inside of a library or book shop. Outside again a man wonders around past high-rise apartment blocks and modern concrete buildings. Nearby children play in the snow. From an upper floor window washing drying on lines below. Back outside children jump from concrete blocks into the snow, nearby a horse is attached to a sled. A group of men and women climb off a bus changes to a couple getting into warm clothing inside an apartment. A horse drawn sled travels past as passengers climb aboard a bus which is quite full. People walk along a snowy path, on a outside bench a woman lays out several bags containing colourful fruits and sweets. Two women cross a road, a woman pulls a small child past on a sled. A group walks towards Ivan the Great Bell Tower, a woman eats an apple as crowds of people walk past her. A crowd gathers around a table selling books changes to crowds of people walk past across a busy square or street. Traffic and an electric tram travels past along a busy boulevard, on the other side of the road three tipper-trucks full of snow. A group board the bus, in the background a large two-tied pillared building. The bus dives past displays showing several red stars and a Soyuz space rocket set up on a plinth. The group wonder around past other space craft set up on plinths. Inside a shop or factory several large displays of various fruits rotate. Outside four women walk along a snowy path changes to a fountain inside a park. A crowd walks near to the base of the Monument to the Conquest of Space, past the statue of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. A phantom car ride through Moscow traffic changes to views from an airplane taxiing along a runway and taking off. The film ends on Joanna Forsyth posing in a new jacket.
