Summary The first of two home movies produced by John Scott Forsyth of a holiday to Portugal with wife Joanna, youngest son Richard plus his friend. The film features the family visiting various historic locations as well as swimming in various rivers, lakes, and the Atlantic Ocean. They also visit the cellars of Fonseca port in the city of Porto as well as visiting the ruins of the Roman settlement of Conimbriga near Condeixa-a-Nova. The film also captures some of the local life with Portuguese fishermen and their wives working together to pull nets from the sea. |
Description
The first of two home movies produced by John Scott Forsyth of a holiday to Portugal with wife Joanna, youngest son Richard plus his friend. The film features the family visiting various historic locations as well as swimming in various rivers, lakes, and the Atlantic Ocean. They also visit the cellars of Fonseca port in the city of Porto as well as visiting the ruins of the Roman settlement of Conimbriga near Condeixa-a-Nova. A large passenger ferry docked at a harbour, on-board Joanna and Richard Forsyth join other passengers on deck to watch the ship depart. At sea passengers sit around on deck in deckchairs while other swim in a small swimming pool. Richard and other children swim around in the pool. Passengers’ lookout from deck as the ferry approaches its destination harbour.
The exterior of a historic church or castle, cars parked along a cobbled street. A bridge crosses towards a castle, people making their way thought the entranceway. Richard and another boy run and play around the battlements looking down on the town below. Joanna and the boys walk around the castle passing a statue of a stone bear.
Richard and the boy climb into a rubber dingy paddling out onto a lake. At a campsite they stand beside a VW Campervan. Joanna, Richard and the second boy have a picnic on inflatable lilos before all three head back on the water with Joanna paddling in the dinghy and the boys swimming after her.
People walk around an ornate garden walking toward a large house. Joanna, Richard and two other come along a gravel driveway beside the house.
On a beach Richard and the other boy build sandcastles while Joanna rests on the sand nearby. A group of children, towels draped across their shoulders, walk past sitting on the sand beside the surf.
Joanna and Richard walk along a path under a bridge. Across the river the skyline of a town or city, on the water nearby a sailing boat. In the distance a second metal arch bridge crossing the river.
A large sign about an entrance reads ‘Fonseca. Vintage Port Cellars’. Inside worker process bottles of port.
The VW Campervan seen previous is parked in a wooded area. Richard sits nearby writing in a small booklet, a little further away Joanna is reading a book. Joanna and Richard go swimming in a lake or river, in the near distance a steep hillside. Two men row past in a traditional Portuguese fishing boats.
At a railway station Richard looks over a steam locomotive, it pulls away.
A family group stand chatting inside a whitewash room, outside a small boy plays with a doll beside a parked car.
A phantom car ride along a bumpy road, possibly through a vineyard as what appear to be vines are growing in rows along the hillside above and below. Joanna speaks with a local woman who is kneeling on the ground, standing beside them Richard and two other boys. The local woman pours the content of a bowl she is holding onto the ground.
A family walk past along a road, the man leads a wagon which is being pulled by cattle.
Richard and Joanna swim in a river and paddle in the dinghy. Nearby a swimming pool, Richard and another boy splashing through a channel of water build beside the pool. Richard and Joanna swim in a river playing with an inflatable beach ball, a viaduct crossing over the river in the background.
Joanna and Richard walk towards a large building or church changing to them walking along a narrow lane with houses and a church rising up around them. They walk up a set of stone steps towards the entrance of a church, a directional sign reads ‘Conimbriga’. Visitors walk around the ruins of this large Roman settlement of Conimbriga, Joanna looking down on a mosaic in the floor of one house. Views of other mosaics around the site. Joanna turns on a water tape and Richard and the other boy drinks from it.
From atop a battlement, Joanna, Richard and the second boy pose for the camera looking out across a town below.
On a beach Richard and another boy race across the sand towards the water. Joanna watches as a group of local men and women work together to pull a fishing net from the sea. A crowd gathers round it to look at the catch. On another beach several traditional fishing boats are under construction; cars drive past along a different beach where more fishing boats are moored up on the sand.
Two women lead horse and carriages along a busy road, a woman speaks with a man sitting at an outdoor café table. A woman pushes several large trays of fileted fish with a trolley, a small boy beside her helps. A man is chequered clothing poses for the camera, two women walk past carrying large trays on their heads.
On a beach Richard looks at a basket of fish sitting in a fishing boat moored on the sand, nearby local fishermen sit on the sand repairing their nets. Two cattle are hitched to a fishing boat that is then pulled out of the surf onto the beach.
A large crowd of mainly women stand around stalls set up outside a building changes to Richard and the other boy taking a ride up a mountainside possibly in a funicular. At the summit umbrellaed tables are set up overlooking the town and beach below.
On the doorstep of a house two older women are bobbin lace making, at a market large crowds walk past various stalls. A crowd of people stand on a balcony overlooking the market.
Joanna, Richard and the other boy walk around the ruins of a castle or fort.
